Experience with giving Metacam to your pug?
Hello All,
I haven't posted here before. I used to get wonderful support from some of you when we were all on PugVillage, but it is so different now. I hoping some of you may weigh in on Metacam. Our son's pug Oscar has had a biopsy this week which looks as though he has a tumor on or near his lung. We are taking him to a specialist tomorrow morning. But he has had some discomfort and vomitted this morning so we tried to get something to help him feel better. Our vet prescribed Metacam 1x per day. Do you think it is safe? I guess it is an anti inflamatory?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Laurel

Re: Experience with giving Metacam to your pug?
I have used Metacam a lot over the years on many of my pugs and other breeds. Most do fine on it. If it's used for years, then you need to monitor liver stuff, but it's a very common anti-inflammatory for post surgical, arthritis, etc. discomfort. Some dogs do get gastric upset with it, but not all. I usually give it with food.
the only two dogs I've ever had issues with it were (1) my pom who was on it for a long time due to luxating patellas and she did develop an inability to tolerate it and we switched her to Previcox. And my pug Tank has a reaction to the beef flavouring used in it as he has many allergies.

Hi Laurel! Great to see you here, and welcome. I use Metacam with Peachy. However, she does get a dose of Pepcid AC with it. The vet has her on it because it is cheaper than Rimadyl. My new hospice pug will also be on Metacam. He had difficulty adjusting to it, the vet said, but is doing well with it now. I know some members on this forum had to switch to another pain med.

Hi Laurel...glad to see you here too!
I used it on Tiny Tim, Bailey and Betty at some point and always did the Prilosec with it and had no problems with it. Some start and once every other day until the dog gets acclimated to it.
Good thoughts for Oscar! Keep us posted on his prognosis.

Toby Love Jones takes Metacam daily for arthritis. I give it to him with his supper. He's never had any problems with it...knock on wood. We recently started our lab, Homer, on it. Again, so far no problems for him.

We've used it for various pugs through out the years too (fosters and our own) and Buster was the only one who had trouble with gastric upset but he had a sensitive tummy to begin with. We switched him to Tramadol and he did just fine with that. Best wishes to Oscar!
