Questions about eye surgery....

Post  PhoebesMommy on 11/20/2011, 5:59 pm

Hello all. As you know I recently adopted a pug from a rescue. Well after I was fostering for a few days I noticed one of his eyes looked a little "distorted" more like his pupil had ruptured or something. So I pointed it out to the rescue group. Well after I had adopted him the rescue group offered to take him to their vet, which is also my vet to get his eye examined. Well sure enough he does have some eye problems. His eye lids turn in and his eye lashes rub on his eye and he also has a skin fold thats grown into his eye. Well hes having surgery for this on Tuesday. So, does anyone have any experience with anything like this or something similar? Any advice on how to care for him while hes healing? They will be doing both eyes. Hes already starting to go blind in his left eye due to this. Im not exactly sure what all the surgery will entail as I didnt take him to the vet, the rescue took him, because I had to work. The daughter of the lady that runs the rescue is a very good friend of mine so she stopped by my place while I was at work and took him to his examination. I know their eyes arent anything we want to mess with so I want to care for him the best I can. Any advice would help.

I haven't had any of my pugs go through this, but I do know the condition, entropian, is fairly common and the surgery fairly simple. Of course, it's not the procedure but the anesthetic that worries us! Hope all goes smoothly and he recovers quickly.

Yep. Been there. Done that--with my foster boy Pippin. He basically had a pug face lift--both lower eyelids fixed to keep lashes from rubbing his eyes, nose fold removed, and something else that I'm blessed if I can remember. Mostly you need to keep up with the eye drops they send home with you and keep them from rubbing it. I have found that I have to put most eye surgery dogs into really long cones as many use corners of furniture, bookcases, etc to scratch the stitches. So long cone when I can't watch them and short cone for eating, pottying and while they are right under my nose.

I actually saw Pippin today and he hasn't had any further eye problems. Surgery was very successful.

Mac had surgery on his eyes just about 2 years ago. They put a couple stitches on the inside corners of both his eyes (bilateral medial canthoplasty). In regards to the anesthesia, he came home and no control over his bladder, so we put a diaper on him for a bit. Other than that it was keeping up with the eye drops, and wiping regularly with a soft warm wet washcloth to get rid of the blood that accumulated in the corners of his eyes.
He had to go back for a couple rechecks, but at his last appt. the ophthalmologist said she didn't need to see him for 5 years. We've really had no issues since.

I hope all goes well for your little guy.

Thanks ladies. I will drop him off tomorrow on my way to work, then pick him up after work. Which means I get a shorter day...YAY! Im sure I will be a nervous wreck waiting for that call saying hes recovering.

What about feeding time, will he need me to elevate his food dish since he will be dressed as a lamp? Phoebe doesnt like her dishes elevated so I gave the ones she had away (her tags use to get caught between the elevator and her dish and she would make a mess, and it would scare her) I do know I will have to crate him while Im away, which will make him less pleased with me. I dont think hes ever been crated at his old home so its a chore to wrangle him up.

Can you take the cone off just for feeding time? I think as long as you watch him and he doesn't have the chance to rub on his eyes at all, it would be ok. Otherwise it might take some pretty good maneuvering for him to be able to eat.

I had a foster that had eye surgery and he could eat with the short cone on, no problem! He was good about leaving it alone, but he'd stick his face in the bowl and the cone would come down around all the sides like a force field!!! Very Happy

Well he goes in tomorrow at 7:30. Please keep him in your prayers that he has a quick and speedy recovery....also pray that my little diva Phoebe doesn't tourment him too much while he's dressed as a lamp...lol! I trust my vet more than anyone so I know he's going to be in good hands.
