You all know Buffy is quite elderly and a bit fragile. These past few days have been challenging for her and here is my question (I know how I would answer it). She has CHF and kidney disease and is to eat GD food, kibble and canned. She HATES it, spits out the soaked kibble and ignores the canned. She didn't eat much recently so I am giving her Solid Gold canned and a bit of SG soaked kibble with some strong cheese bits on top. After I flood it, I warm it up in the microwave. She adores it. DH and I agree that it's better for her to eat something that's not good for her as opposed to NOT eating something that's good for her. She tried this about 6 months ago when we were gone and she was near death when we picked her up. A few Arby's Roast Beef sandwiches brought her back. She loves bacon which I have twice a week for protein and she gets little nibbles of that. She knows Bacon Day! She may be almost blind and completely deaf but that little pushed in nose can smell the bacon. She's shedding like crazy and I'm using the Furminator on her, seems odd to be shedding now. The others aren't shedding at all. Please reassure me I'm doing the right thing for her. I know if I don't feel well, I don't want health food, I want good food. She was at the vet's two weeks ago and except for heart/kidney, she's in fair shape for her advanced age. Thanks friends.

Buffy not eating at times Empty Buffy and Jasmine

I realize it's a stupid question as I wouldn't let her starve to death but I get upset when she won't eat her prescription food and with her one bulging good eye, looks so pathetic. If she continues with this campaign, she'll go back to the vet, probably now the one where Jasmine goes. Her vet saved her life! Her test results came back from Texas A and M yesterday and everything is normal! Now she can go 3 months between Vit. B12 shots. She was getting them every 2 weeks at first. She's off all medication where she was taking 13 pills a day before. I'm sure glad we found this great vet.

When LouLou was going downhill fast and wouldn't eat, my vet said something that has always stuck with me "If there are only certain things she'll eat and they're not what we'd term the best diet, who cares? It's not like you're trying to put her on a healthy diet to add years to her life, you're trying to make the time she has left as good as you can." LouLou lived for another 18 months, and her appetite improved. Do what you can Joanne and let Buffy decided. Just having food in her tummy, no matter what it is within reason of causing any further problems, (and you know well the limitations) might improve her appetite.

A ton of good thoughts for you both.Buffy not eating at times 335895

I vote for get food into her and make her happy. Do this in as healthy a way as possible, but I wouldn't lose sleep over needing to jazz up her food a bit.

Hows about a bit of canned pumpkin... with it being sweet, and mixing it in with her food she may like it. Heaven knows how much my Yoda who is over 16 LOVES it!

Big picture it is more important that she eats than what she eats. Personally I don't think much of the prescription diets and they usually taste like the bags/cans they come in. The Solid Gold is good nutrition that is easy for her to digest and turn into energy so go with that. I wouldn't do the Arby's or the bacon just because the high-sodium content in both is really tough on the kidneys (and will cause her to retain water and she's probably on lasix or something so not helping).

If you need a meal topper look for Wysong's Dentatreat - its a powdered cheese mix for cats/dogs that has a bunch of dental enzymes/abrasives in it. You sprinkle it on every meal, it helps keep the mouth in good shape...and well, its cheese (once you open it you need to keep in frig to keep it fresh). Our last cat had CRF and wouldn't eat without Dentatreat on every meal.

If you have to do bacon try turkey bacon and bake it (about 18 minutes at 350, I use the Jenny-O extra lean when needed)...then pop it into food processor so you've got bacon bits you can freeze and grab a spoonful as needed.

Based on the kidney issues and shedding I'd start giving her a salmon oil supplement, I use one in a pump bottle...everybody gets a squirt every meal (I use a non-smell salmon oil by Wild Naturals - there's a previous post in this forum with a link to it at Amazon). The salmon oil is really good for kidney health as well as skin/coat. If her coat is shedding but is also getting oily, keep an eye on her thyroid. Generally CRF masks hyperT and vice-versa.

I might presoak and rinse the Arby's, but I would much rather see her eat something than nothing----Princess cared deeply for canned mackeral and could tell the difference between domestic canned and wild Thai mackeral.
Let her be happy.

Thank you all for your very thoughtful replies. I will take a bit from each of them. As of tonight, she's back to eating the prescription food with a bit of Romana stinky cheese bits on top, soaked, warmed. She has few teeth left & it's hard for her to chew. I like all the ideas you set forth and it's nice to know 'strangers' care about sweet Buffy. She's kind of a scroungy looking Pug (sorry to say that about a wonderful friend) but she's not very attractive. She needs a dental but the vet kind of shrugged and let it go. I would be very afraid at her age. When I had Min. Schnauzers, the local vets would just have me grab their beards and they'd clean the teeth without putting them out. It was a half assed job, to be sure, but they seemed to have decent appearing teeth anyway. Sheila, Flower Boy and a couple of others lived to be 16 and they had never been out for a dental. Remember I lost Annie during a dental about 5 or 6 years ago and the vet and I remember it well. Buffy sends her love to all. Very Happy Buffy not eating at times 335895

Just caught this, and I'm very glad that Miss Buffy is eating. I agree, it is much better for her to be eating something not as good for her as to not be eating what is good for her. Hugs to you, Joanne, and hugs to Buffy, too.
