Beware of Canine Teeth Cleaners
Just found out that one of the most widely used products added to drinking water for getting tartar off dogs' teeth contains xylitol!

Re: Beware of Canine Teeth Cleaners
Thanks for the information Hilary. My vet just gave me this for my hospice pug Moose. I haven't put it in the water yet, and am going to return it to her the next time I am there. All three would have had access to it.

Re: Beware of Canine Teeth Cleaners
I seem to recall having seen this before somewhere. Apparently it has been brought up with the company which has said that the levels of xylitol in the product are so small that they would not have any effect. The product has been going a while without all the animals using it keeling over, so maybe that is true. Nevertheless I don't think I'd want to use it - I don't know if any research has been done on any possible build up of xylitol in the system.

Re: Beware of Canine Teeth Cleaners
I brought this up to our vet several years ago and she claimed too that the amount was too minimal to cause a problem. But personally, I do not want to take the chance so I tossed mine. Vets also sell Science Diet knowing it contains ethoxyquin so I make my own decisions.

Years ago I found one of those "gravy" things that you put on to encourage eating that had onions in it. I had a running argument with someone in the company who also said the the small amount of onion wouldn't hurt the dog. I told him that onions for dogs have a cummulative effect and sent him the defination but it didn't do any good there either.

Geez and it's listed as the third ingredient too. My vet has given us samples of this stuff before but we've never used them. I'll have to pass along this info. to him. Thanks!
Re: Beware of Canine Teeth Cleaners
There is this kong looking thing that is being promoted in Julian's puppy class, its a circular shaped kong with ridges where the toothpaste goes and the puppy chews it to get the enzymes in his mouth, they said they are not concerned with actual brushing just the enzymes...I looked at the trainer like she lost her mind and refused the sample!

I returned Moose's unopened bottle to the vet clinic today and they are going to credit the rescue account.
