pee accident??

Post  destanie101 on 2/10/2012, 3:36 am

Franklin is notorious for having a "diva" moment and peeing in my kitchen floor in the middle of the night, happens once in a blue moon when someone (*ahem not momma) forgets to let him out before bedtime. he pees dead center of the floor as if to tell us "this is what happens when you forget me".

however, yesterday he peed on his chair (yea, he's that spoiled he has his own personal chair in the living room). just out of the blue he peed as he laid there. He did bark immediately after and seemed to look sad about it (remorse?).

Hasn't happened again, so i'm hoping it was just a fluke. He will be 7 years old in a about a month, hoping this isn't the start of some sort of old(er) age incontinence.

Any recommendations other than keeping an eye on him? no blood in his pee then or since and acting normal (eating, drinking, peeing/poop normally).... any other signs I should look for?

Anything like this ever happen to you guys? random "sleep pee" as we're calling it???

I think I'd have him checked for a UTI.

Yes, it may call for a visit to the vet...My 9 year old lab had a UTI, so after it cleared we thought everything was OK.

One evening we were looking at something on the computer, which is in the kitchen and watched her pee in her sleep....poor girl...so she went to the vet...Again to see if maybe the UTI wasn't cleared up all the way from the antibiotics and it was so we did a blood panel and now she is on an incontinence medication...

The vet says incontinence does not have a preferable age, she has seen young dogs that have it, the medication is supposed to strengthen the sphincter...

LuLu was wetting the bed in her sleep on occasion. After ruling out a UTI we started her on Proin and once we got the dosage figured out we haven't had any accidents since.

He may have a UTI or have him checked for stones or crystals in his bladder. It sounds alot like my old roomates lab. She would pee in her sleep and eventually she was diagnosed with epilepsy. She lived a long happy life and only needed meds later in life to control it. I would think the incontinence is more common in females than males, but still prossible.

My 7 yr old Lanie was peeing in her sleep occasionally. After ruling out a UTI, even though my vet didn't think a UTI would cause her to pee while sleeping, she started DES for incontinence. She takes it once a week and hasn't had a problem. I know it's only used in female dogs for estrogen replacement but now I'm curious as to why he started her on that and not proin. I'll have to ask when I take her in for her annual next week, not that I want to change her.

I hope this was just a one time thing and he doesn't have anymore problems.

Some breeds seem to be prone to incontinence, luckily pugs don't seem to be one of them. Reggie was having huge, dark colored urinary incontinence accidents when he was sleeping (it took me a few days to realize what it was), and it turned out to be a UTI. It's recommended to recheck for the UTI (if he does have one) about 3-5 days after finishing the meds. If Reggie would have still had an infection, or blood in his urine, we would have cultured and done x rays.

Males are less likely to get UTIs, but it does happen. They can travel down from the kidneys, or happen do to stress or holding urine too long. Or bacteria can travel up.

Good thoughts for your little man! It may be a fluke, but you might want to consider having him checked out.

thanks guys, I did call the vet this morning, she can't get him in until Monday, but she also didn't sound very concerned...trying to see that as a good thing??

Cameron (DH) is now calling the pee accident a "wet dream"....Rolling Eyes

Franklin's just not a baby anymore and especially after the KC scare last summer he worries me

I'd talk to vet again and bring in a urine sample today. They probably send out to the lab every night and she'd have results tomorrow. If not a UTI it could be a bladder infection which can lead to stones very quickly. If he goes outside and is peeing normally then Monday would be okay. But if anything else seems off (he has to pee more, he's peeing longer, he's in 'pee position' but nothing is happening) I'd definitely at least get a urine sample in today. Last thing you want is a weekend trip to the ER vet if things change. Bear in mind I'm an OCD Jewish mother Wink

Also, 7 is middle-aged for a pug - maybe he's peeing on the floor 'cuz your calling him old Laughing (just kidding!).

he's peeing and pooping normally...he did have a pretty quick pee this morning as it is roughly 30ish outside and raining..Lol but even that is normal for him. He's drinking water fine and pestering me for my "cutie" as we speak...I'm thinking he's ok to wait til monday unless it happens again (my vet is open on Saturdays).
