? about being in heat....not for me!
A friend just adopted a mixed lab/Shepard girl approx 2yrs old, things were great for over a week with their other mixed dog then the girl went into heat and picked a fight. His vet said he would not fix her for a while like a month or so after she is done with her cycle.
He thinks this might be normal behavior for her (the fighting) but I am trying to tell him otherwise, womans hormones can be mighty powerful, at least in humans I don't so much know about dogs.
His other dog is fixed so no issue there but he is very upset. Can females get aggressive when in heat and is the vet correct to wait.

The vet is absolutely correct to wait. Generally the rule is heat lasts 3 to 4 weeks and you wait another 4 to 6 weeks to spay.
And girls in heat can be all kinds of ways--slutty, grouchy, you name it. And the heat cycle is a process so if she's not at the "ready to conceive stage" in the cycle, she can find the added attention annoying as heck.
Having said that, I'd be watching her after she's spayed just in case she's got some temperament issues going on.

Thanks Blanche, he is freaking out thinking of not keeping her and is worried how she will be once fixed.
I know he will not give her up but he justs needs to relax a bit and wait and see how she does once she is fixed.

It's impossible to tell when they are in heat. The reality is that a bitch in heat will be a hag when she's in heat, but not yet ready to actually breed. And will be a hag again after that phase has passed. And many of the girls that have been inappropriately bred will be hags throughout.Donna wrote:Thanks Blanche, he is freaking out thinking of not keeping her and is worried how she will be once fixed.

He'll have to wait and see. This is one of many reasons why dogs shouldn't be adopted out intact. He may give up on her when the behaviour is all about being intact. But he won't know that until after the fact. In the meantime, he needs to keep these two separated so that they don't develop a habit of battling.

Thanks again Blanche, I am going to pass this info on. I would be shocked if he decided not to keep her. He can overreact to things but normally he does not make rash decisions.

Side note ...
I think the information offered by other members of this group is wonderful.
Good luck with your pup.
