Slowing down the hoover Empty Slowing down the hoover

Post  puglouie 2/19/2012, 6:18 pm

I was talking about this on FB but Friday, Ulysses choked himself hoovering his food up. He was foaming at the mouth and gagging. I had to step in and give him a modified CPR squeeze so he could clear his throat. I've never seen a dog eat so fast -- and I've seen dogs hoover. It's like he grew up fighting for his food.

Anyway, I need to get him to slow down. Sam-Scott and Rona have suggested the slow-food bowls but the ones I've seen don't look like a pug can get any food out of them at all. My Vet suggested I put a tennis ball in the bowl but Ulysses would surely figure out how to get it out of the way or he might try to eat it for all I know. I swear this boy is the piggiest puggy ever -- as soon as I cleared his throat of white foam and the stuck food, he dove right back into the bowl to stuff his face again.

So, does anyone use a slow bowl? Any suggestions on where I could get one that would work with pugs or perhaps construct one out of the bowls I have? Thank you so much everybody.

There are a bunch of different ones out there, Elizabeth, and most of them work for any dog, including pugs. It's harder for them to get the food, but that's the point, isn't it?

Here are some of the ones out there:

http://www.amazon.com/Skid-Stop-Slow-Feed-Bowl/dp/B00251EPL2

http://www.eatslowerpetdishes.com/

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=19445

And here is a link that talks about what to do with the gulper and has some suggestions on making your own bowl and other alternatives:

I have a ravenous Frenchie I take care of and we use a large Kong in the bowl. It slows her down just enough so she doesn't chose (or barf afterward). Because it is smaller at one end, she can still get her mouth close enough to eat.

I've used this one (that Blanche mentioned):
http://www.amazon.com/Brake-Fast-Food-Slow-Feed-Bowl/dp/B000PE30MQ

for Chloe and she can get the food just fine, just a slower pace. Their tongues can reach what their muzzles can't.

Thanks, Maryjo for the personal insight. I looked at the bowls that Blanche mentioned and I thought "how can he eat from those" so I appreciate evidence that he can. I'm going to order one -- though I do have one more question. I've heard pugs shouldn't eat from plastic bowls because they can be allergic. I've always used metal ones. Anybody here have the same concerns with the plastic?

Reggie gets most of his meals out of this Kong Stuff a Ball . If you order from Amazon, double check the size. It has a whole in the middle and he has to roll it around to make the kibble fall out. It fits max about 1/2 cup kibble. I like it because it also gets his brain working.

This wouldn't work for me because both my pugs are food aggressive and I have to feed them at the same time on different sides of the porch. If Ulysses is getting his food from the Kong ball, Chamuco will fight him for it. I'll try the bowls. I think they would work.

If the bowls don't work then do try a kong. I used to put one in Toddy's bowl with some of the kibble put in the kong. It did slow him down quite well.

The only suggestion I can offer is moistening the food to a mush like state..Julian chokes on kibble...

You can also spread it out on a cookie sheet prior to getting the bowl. That slows them enough usually.

We have this one that I bought for Zoe but she wound up gulping too much air while trying to get her food. I didn't like it. She'd wind up really bloated:

I bought this one for Duke just before he passed away so it hasn't gotten much use. Seemed to work ok though:

I was going to suggest this as well.

Tarrington has a very nice slow feeder bowl. There is a video of Zorro eating out of it, under his birthday thread, I believe.

Sort of. We have a wide, covered porch around the house. Chamuco gets fed by the front door and then Ulysses gets his food around the corner, by the sliding door. Neither can see the other while they're eating and we put Chamuco's bowl down first so they finish at roughly the same time. If I fed Ulysses with a Kong ball, he would chase it around the deck and Chamuco would join him and they would fight (viciously) over it.

I'm going to try a new bowl and go from there. I've served him mushy food but then he gets his muzzle and folds wet and even though I dry it off right away, he'll develop pug zits on his chin. He has a deep fold that requires daily cleaning or it will start to smell and get really caked with dirt. At the moment, he's got a little open boo-boo in it that we're having to treat with topical antibiotics. Keeping all those rolls clean and dry is certainly a lot of work. I'm sure nobody here has had that problem either. Haha.

That is about how I separate mine too... Peachy in the kitchen, Moose in the dining room, Bubba in the scrapbook room. When Jewel was still alive, she would have to eat in the bathroom with the door closed.

These two get very upset when I separate them by a door. If one of them sees the other outside through the door (they've all got glass in them), they lunge at each other very viciously and start clawing and barking through the door.

The food thing used to be bad but they haven't fought around eating time in weeks, so I think we got a handle on it.

I pick up their bowls from the porch and then fill them up in the kitchen. They usually bark and nip at each other then (especially Chamuco -- the one time he's more aggressive then the little guy). Then I walk them into the middle of the living room and tell Ulysses to sit and stay. He's very good at this -- which shows me how smart he is and how he's very choosy about which directions he follows. Arrgh. hair pull

Anyway, Ulysses sits and stays (for the most part) while I take Chamuco out to his spot, ask him to sit and then put the bowl down. They've both have the sit and wait for the signal to eat (and they both look up at me first) so I feel that's progress. Once Chamuco gets the "go" sign, Ulysses usually runs up to me (I still can't get him to sit for the whole time). Then he and I go out the other door (Ulysses does the spin thing -- I have to remember to open the sliding door wide because he has missed the opening before and nearly knocked himself out. That's happened a couple of times.) Anyway, then I ask him to sit and wait, put the bowl down and then give him the "go" signal. So by the time he starts his food, Chamuco is halfway through his and they end up finishing together. Believe it or not, Chamuco eats very fast for a dog and yet he's barely half the speed of Ulysses.

As long as they finish together, they don't fight. But if one of them finishes before the other and approaches the other, they are likely to get upset and fight.
So that's my twice-daily routine. Pugs. You live in their world under their rules.
