Hello. We have got a problem with my girl's eye.. i cannot speak english well but i'm going to try to tell you, i hope you understand me. In my city every veterinarian says "we have no information about eye problems on dogs"! so i found this page and i want to ask you.. My pug is 10 years old. i don't know what her eye's problem.. i think Corneal ulcer or glaucoma. Her eye turned blue and there is a red spot on her eye. the other eye turned blue too but i used xalatan and it s good now. but this eye is getting worse. now i am using TROPAMİD, GENTA and XALATAN. but there s no success.. Veterinarian said to me "there's nothing to do, maybe we have to take this eye, she'll lost her eye".. i am helpless.. please give me an advice.. what i have to do? which medicines i have to use? should i continue to use these medicines (xalatan, tropamid and genta)? i m going crazy. please help me.. thank you.
i can't show her photo because "New members are not allowed to post external links or emails for 7 days".

I'm so sorry you're having trouble with your pug!

It sounds like she has an ulcer, which can go bad quite quickly. I am not familiar with the products you're using (someone else might be more help) but I would ask the vet for an antibiotic eye ointment. To find out if it is indeed an ulcer, a vet can put in some flourescent drops, turn out the lights and shine an ultraviolet light in the dogs eye and the ulcer will be visible.

Is there another vet you can go to? This vet sounds lazy and inept. Is there a university with a vet school you can get to? I would definitely give up on that vet! The very best of luck. I am sure others will chime in with good advice too.

How often are you using the eye medicines? If you are not using them 3 times a day, I would do that.

The problem is that even here in the United States is when an ulcer goes untreated or is very severe, it can get bad quickly. Likely when you see that red dot, the ulcer is no longer superficial (or not on the surface anymore). Ulcers can turn into melting ulcers where the layers of the eye are dying and shedding off. It's a very painful and bad type of ulcer. One of the treatments for this (with the eye medicine) is actual blood serum (a vet gives it out) and it is put in the eye around 6 times a day.

Honestly, even in America, if an ulcer gets that bad, commonly the pet looses the eye. If your girl needs to have her eye removed, she'll recover just fine. The eye may loose sight anyway, and if the ulcer can't be fixed, then having the eye removed may be the best situation. Many, many pugs adjust well with one eye missing or even both.

Obviously I am NOT a vet and the above is just my opinions from experience, but it sounds like you aren't able to get ideal help in Turkey. Can your vet try talking with a vet from here? Or could you email some vets?

I hope you are able to help your girl. I am sorry you are going through this.

I have seen the pic on another site. Here it is:

Here is my reply from the other site:

I am worried that it may be a melting ulcer.

http://vetspecialists.co.uk/factsheets/Ophthalmology_Facts/Melting_Corneal_Ulcers

Do a Google image search.

If it is a melting ulcer the eye can be saved but it needs specialist treatment, and fast. If you are not sure what it is, do not use any eye treatment that contains steroids. Steroids are bad for ulcers. Use only antibiotic or lubricating treatment and apply at least every 2 hours day and night.

I hope now others can see the pic maybe they may have more ideas for you.

Theresa has given you good advice - she knows her stuff. I have nothing to add, other than my positive thoughts and a prayer for your girl.

I'm sorry to read about your pug's eye problem. My pug had a corneal ulcer two summers ago. The eye specialist here had him on an antibiotic salve, eye drops, atropine and at least one other medicine I can't recall for several weeks. As the ulcer healed, the dog got the medications less frequently, but at least 3 times a day for the first 3 weeks (more during the first 10 days). He also had to wear a plastic cone/collar around his head to prevent his scratching at the eye and making it worse. Did your vet give you a collar (they are sometimes called "Elizabeth collars" if you want to google them) to have her wear? They are large plastic cones that fit around the dog's neck and extend past their head - most of them hate to wear them, but they do make healing easier).

I wish you luck in taking care of your dog's problem. It sounds as if it is very difficult to find veterinary support where you are. That must be very difficult.
