ACL Empty ACL

Jasmine has been going to her new vet for almost a year now & he has done wonders. She has PLE, IBS and two other intestinal ailments. Last week tho, he commented on her rear left leg being gimpy and thinks she's had an ACL or miniscus break. I talked to him again today & he said a small dog doesn't react as much as a heavier dog would but that she can have problems as she ages (she's 11, a rescue from Missouri puppy mills). He also said that if she doesn't limp after any of our many walks, she probably 'could' get along without surgery. The only time she limps is when I let the dogs out into the fenced in back yard and she races to the very end, not putting weight on that foot. He told me to keep her from jumping, we have to lift her out of the upper crate and lift her off our bed. I've had her about 5 years and she's always been a jumper, like when I'm on the computer and she's gated in the kitchen, it's a constant jump, jump, jump. Do any of you have experience with this? My miniscus broke about 3 years ago, I had the arthroscopic surgery (which really hasn't helped) and we seem to have the same ailments, IBS, bad knees, cataracts, I hope she isn't PG *G*. No, she's spayed & so am I....

So sorry no responses.

I don't have any experience with this type of injury. Can you take her to a specialist, even just for a consult?

I would think the main thing that would help her would be to make sure she is not carrying any excess weight. Most pugs, even if they are not overweight, can stand to lose a pound or two without becoming too skinny.

Sorry, Jasmine isn't a Pug but a teeny Boston Terrier, under constant treatment for Lymphangiectasia, PLE, Cushings and IBS. She can't gain weight but is holding OK with those ailments. She is very thin, scrawny so Bella, your suggestion was fine. I never thought of it that way before. The vet did say larger dogs have a rougher time of it. It just doesn't seem to bother her except when I let her out and she limps to the end of the fence, then she's OK. Long walks don't seem to bother her either, thank dog. Glad you brought up the weight thing as I really hadn't thought about it before with her. Now if this were chubby Willow Pug, it would be a different story. she's never met a crumb she didn't like *G*.

Just saw this. I've been a little absent lately. Bruno tore his ACL and had the surgery. Since dogs have 4 legs, the surgery isn't crucial unless the dog is in real pain or discomfort. The surgery does become necessary, however, if the dog also injures the knee joint on the other hind leg, which is very probable.

Anyway, the key to managing a dog with an ACL injury is what is already mentioned above -- keep the weight low, no jumping on or off furniture, no stairs, walking is usually fine, but running can place them at risk for further injury. A joint joint supplement will help.

Besides being very skinny, allergic to most foods, only can have certain foods due to her many ailments, I wonder what joint supplements she could take? I take glucosomine/chrondroitin faithfully. Kendie: do you have any suggestion of what I could give her? Her vet didn't mention anything and we don't see him again until her monthly checkup in three weeks. She's fine while walking and it doesn't seem to bother her at all, it's just when I let her out and she limps/hops to the end of the yard, then she comes back and all is well (that I can see). If she'd act like she had pain, I'd definately do something about it. Oh yes, she's going on 12 now. I lift her off and on my bed, also in and out of her high crate but she does do steps quickly. Maybe I should carry her up and down them? this is puzzling to me as it seems to come and go but it's been this way for over 2 years now & her former vet never caught it.
