Anal Gland Surgery? Empty Anal Gland Surgery?

Post  Newsie96 7/5/2012, 9:31 pm

A friend of mine's vet recommended her pug have anal gland surgery. Anyone ever get this done on their pugs? I told her I'd ask "the experts". She had to get her glands expressed every two weeks. And the doctor said they were so thick from the constant expressing and she wasn't getting any relief.

She is taking her to a specialist in Newtown, CT. The doctor also recommended doing her elongated soft palette. She was told it was really bad.

Never had it done to a pug, but had a border collie that had hers removed and it was a breeze, but that was 20+ years ago. I'm assuming this is to have the glands removed as that is what I had done.

I have not had any experience with a dog having it done (the anal gland surgery)... but, I have heard that it can cause fecal incontinence. However, it sounds like things are already pretty bad, so maybe that is not a concern.

Have you heard the new research saying that over-expressing is the cause of more issues? Dr. Becker did an article about how expressing them too often creates more issues than it helps.

As for ESP - I would get a second or even third opinion, unless it is clearly obvious that there is a problem. I always worry about inexperienced vets thinking all pugs need ESP surgery. There is a difference between being told "its really bad" and it actually being really bad, if you know what I mean.

Leslye aka "crazypugmom" had anal gland removal done on one of her pugs before. Hopefully she'll see this and chime in.

Pugsly, Taz and Chyna had theirs removed. Leaking occurred all the time no matter what food they ate or any pumpkin or fiber I tried adding. No problems with the surgery at all. You do need a doctor who knows what they are doing as many nerves are back there that could be damaged and end up with incontinence. It does take 2-3 weeks for recovery. At that time, they may drop a few poop balls without knowing it since things can be irritated and swollen a bit.

We had Hoover's removed as they were constantly leaking. I honestly may not have had it done now, being more educated than I was then, but I honestly don't know the exact root of his issues as I didn't really know enough at the time to ask the right questions and try different things first. We got lucky and he healed fine with no nerve damage issues but it wasn't a painless recovery.

For some reason, it is a really common surgery with GSDs. Not sure why, but a lot of the info on the surgery comes from GSD sites

Pugsley Ann had hers removed. I was a nervous wreck because I was so worried about fecal incontinence. But she came through with flying colors. She was having tons of issues with infections in her glands, leaking, swelling, etc.
