O.k. Mochi had to be on a low protein diet for 2 weeks, if it's just a infecton of her liver. If it's inflamatory decease, then she has to be on that food forever. The vet's food is crap. What is a good low protein dog food I could give Mochi, if she has to be on this diet forever? If it's an infection, she'll only be on this for 2 weeks.

If you are up to the challenge - you could do a homemade diet for her, following the liver diet developed by Lew Olsen. Her book Raw & Natural Nutrition for Dogs is kind of like the home cooking bible (although there are many more out there!). But, she does have a diet that is developed especially for liver health and a lot of information on supplements, etc, so it is a good place to start.

Another idea, now that she's home and recovering, is to do the yucky diet for a few weeks, but get her in to see a holistic vet that can help you design a diet and supplements to support her liver health, without switching directly to the prescription stuff for life.

Some vets just automatically go to prescription diet no matter what (not discounting what Mochi has been through though). I had a foster that came back with calcium oxalate stones, and the vet recommended the UD diet for life. I said no.

I wouldn't do the prescription stuff, the better quality the nutrition the faster the body will heal (IMHO). I got a nasty note in my 'permanent file' from ER vet when Norman had crystals earlier this year and I refused the prescription c/d they were trying to force on me.

I wouldn't do the regular EVO, it is a really rich food and might just be too hard to digest and assimilate properly while the system is compromised. Think about the EVO senior or Innova now does their own brand-name grain-free (it is lower in protein than the EVO and is based on the holistic diet of the Innova aka more fruit and veg vs. the ancestral diet of EVO aka just the meat). A liver supplement will probably be called for as well - I've used denmarin as well as coconut oil (the Cocotherapy brand for dogs) for Vince (liver compromised from phenobarbital).

They're are a number of low-protein kibble/canned foods from decent brands like Artemis, Canine Caviar, I'd go to before the scrip stuff with not great ingredients.

Good luck and healing thoughts from us!

There is quite a bit of evidence that the amount of protein is less important than the quality of the protein. Lisa--I have some diets for liver dogs that I will post in a separate thread.
