My pug's annual "malady"
Hi puglovers. I just discovered this website yesterday. Don't know how to post a pic yet, but will figure it out soon. My pug, Milo, was dumped by his previous owners in the middle of nowhere somewhere near my sisters 76 acres in Peshtigo WI with his Great Dane buddy (unforgivable!). My vet guessed him to be 3-5 yrs old at the time (4.5 yrs ago). 3 wks later he suddenly displayed is malady. It started with a honking cough, but within a few hours he was unable to get a breath for 20-45 seconds at a time. This happened every 5-10 minutes 24 hours a day for 14 days, then magically disappeared ... until the same time the following yr - late August to mid Sept. It first happened on a wkend so I had to go to an ER for pets. They diagnosed it as kennel cough and gave me antibiotics. They seemed to have no affect. I then took him to my regular vet, but they went with that same diagnosis and a different antibiotic ... still to no avail. I found that holding him as erect as possible seemed to help him to ultimately be able to breath again ... until the next episode 5 min. later. After 14 days, it went away just as suddenly as it began. This past August it was the worst it's ever been ... one night he actually stopped breathing to the point of passing out ... and then had a seizure! I was horrified! The next morn we went to the vet. His exray showed what they called a collapsing trachea (it seemed clearly visible even to me). They also anesthetized him and did some sort of a scope to check it out. They put him on a steroid and also Torbutol (sp?), but I can't say he seemed better until 14 days later. He has CT all year, so why only 2 wks in late summer is it a problem? Any suggestions?

Collapsing trachea was my first thought halfway through your post. I'm glad that you found a vet who knows what is going on! My take is that it is triggered by environmental allergies, and the steroids would help with it. I don't know how bad it is where you are, but the pollen count is definitely up here. If the other drug is torbutrol, well, that is another name for butorphenol, which is the generic name for the human drug Stadol. It is primarily used in animals as a cough suppresant, and is also a pain medication. Its major side effect is sleepiness. The recommended dose is 5 mg/20 lbs. Sending you good thoughts and a prayer for Milo.

Milo's malady
Thanks for your input. What do you make of the fact that he only has symptoms for 14 days at the same time each year? All other times, like right now, he shows no signs of ANY problems. I'm sure he has a collapsing trachea today, too. We live in Milwaukee WI. I've never had allergies, myself, nor has anyone in my family, so I have no experience with them. Any recommendations on websites to research?

So sorry to hear that your pug has a collapsing trachea. It is, unfortunately, fairly common. There is a ton of good information in this post: http://www.pugauthority.com/t4914-collapsing-trachea#75289

I'm with Nancy. It sounds like your guy's TC is exacerbated by allergies this time of year. Discuss with your vet about giving him an antihistamine such as Benadryl with the dosage adjusted for his weight. Very good thoughts for your boy! He's lucky to have ended up in such a caring home.

I am just now getting on here. I emailed Sharon some information about CT from my experience with Baby Girl. Unfortunately no medication can cure CT, but alliviate the symptoms.
You said you vet did a scope, what grade did they give the CT? 1-4?

Agree that the condition could be made worse by seasonal allergies. Another possibility is that your heating system might be drying out the inside air and he's reacting to that? Perhaps adding a humidified might help him. If you bring him into a bathroom and run the shower on hot, does it seem to ease his coughing (standard remedy for croup in young children)?
Hope you can figure out the cause to keep your lucky little guy comfortable in the autumn! How lucky for both of you to have found each other after he was abandoned. I'll never understand how people can do things like that.

I just found this website today while looking for information about collapsed trachea in pugs. My 12 1/2 year old pug, Fred, was just diagnosed with this a few days ago. He was prescribed two different medications, but somehow was worse after two days; took him back to the vet this morning and had some changes to the prescriptions. Thank you to all who posted...it's a relief to hear that this is fairly common!
