Glaucoma Empty Glaucoma

Post  pugsrule 10/16/2012, 11:30 pm

Hi all.My Bella was just diagnosed today with glaucoma. Her intraocular pressure reading was 31-39 in one eye and 26-26 in the other.I did a board search here for more info.but only one post came up.She will be getting eye drops daily for a week, then a recheck to see if some of the fluid has gone down.Im hopeing someone can answer some questions I have if they have went through thiswith one of there own, although i wouldnt wish glaucoma on anyone.:(Things like did the eye eventually have to be removed?Did they lose there sight rapidly or did it progress more slowly? Were they in pain?Ive read online that they can have headaches. And last which eye drops were you given?I just picked up Bellas RX and it was $150.00 Shocked I will be calling around to other pharmacys next time..OMP!Bella thanks you for any info you can give Very Happy

Haven't had a pug that went through it, but I think the biggest help is proper diagnosis and treatment, which you've done. Good thoughts for your girl!

Don't know if you can extrapolate from people to dogs, but I thought I'd mention that my father had developed glaucoma in his 70s. He controlled it with eye drops. He did not complain of pain and his sight was not adversely affected. He was able to see and read (with glasses, but he'd worn them for other reasons before the glaucoma was diagnosed) until his death, which had nothing to do with glaucoma.

He was religious about his eye drops, which were very important. Hope your girl's problem can be controlled as well. I haven't had to deal with it with any of my dogs, so I can't give you any info about how it progresses in dogs.

Our Buster had glaucoma. He was on daily drops to help keep the pressure down but I can't recall the name of them. I'd have to look thru his records. They were the same eye drops that they give to humans. I used to get them at our local Target pharmacy. Bella's pressures are pretty high (if I remember correctly, normal intra-occular pressure in a pug should be around 15). Hopefully it will come down with the meds and she'll be fine. Buster never seemed to be in any pain and never lost an eye. He would see the eye specialist every six months for check ups & pressure checks. He also had cataracts - that's how we caught the glaucoma. His pressures spiked one time and he had to go back more frequently for a little while but then they went back down to normal and he was fine.

Our little Yoda's glaucoma arose very quickly... The lens dropped inside right eye for some reason (is how it was explained to me by our vet). His eye pressure was severe and painful so we had to remove his eye. That was a couple years ago or so...

Good luck with your little one.

No advice, just good thoughts and prayers for Bella and your pocketbook. I do know that early diagnosis and consistent treatment is the key in human glaucoma.

That is great news that Bella's IOP has come down. I found early on that judicious bribery with treats made Penny's eye meds a lot easier to do.Laughing
