Kennel cough (or similar)

Why oh why do people bring their dogs to fundraising events (perhaps understandable) or continue to walk them in public places when they are obviously coughing or not well?
My two have contracted kennel cough ( or a similar respiratory infection). Maggot being young and very fit seems to have pretty much shrugged it off. Hattie, on the other hand, has been very poorly and yesterday afternoon I had to rush her to my vet with severe breathing difficulties. She's better today but we have a massive amount of pills for her to take for the next week or so, and it breaks my heart to see her struggling.
I'm not asking for the moon, just a bit of consideration for other dog owners.
Rant over. Sorry, but I needed to offload to people who will understand.

I do hope (a) the elder recovers, (b) "maggot" is an endearing typo, (c) idjits learn (but that's nearly impossible to expect to happen)...

In their "defense" - probably - MAYBE a vet mentioned to them to keep the puppy away from other dogs until the shots are done, but any suggestion of communicable diseases between dogs is never raised as far as I know... and if it is, it comes couched in lots of other commentary that seems more important... ??

Sorry to hear that Hattie is not feeling well.

My 2 boys (both seniors) are on the end side of a kennel cough type infection too. The oldest, George, just turned 14 and his coughing is almost over. Rocky, who is 13, is better but still coughing.

It's heartbreaking to hear the coughing & often gagging from this infection. I'd be furious too if I knew they caught it from another sick dog & the parents were aware of it!

My boys have had the kennel cough vaccine & neither one gets out much so I'm not sure where they got it unless it was from a change in the weather. George gets it every 6 months like clock work (and the weather change).

Margot (who is generally known as Maggot!) seems to be back to her usual naughty self. Hattie, on the other hand, is still having breathing problems, particularly when she wakes from being asleep with a blocked up nose, which is very distressing to watch. She is on enough pills daily to stock a pharmacy. But she's better than she was, for which I am thankful. Hopefully in another few days she will be feeling much better.

Just a couple of things about kennel cough that folks should know--and I know that folks do take their dogs out when they are coughing and they shouldn't--the kennel cough vaccine only covers some of the hundreds of bugs that can cause the illness. Dogs can be contagious before they show signs of it. Recently vaccinated dogs can shed the bug.

And kennel cough is VERY contagious. It can be caught from anywhere that any dog has been. I rarely see it in my house because my dogs are exposed to it all the time. I never vaccinate for it as the only times I did vaccinate for it, everyone got it.

And depending on where you live, this has been a very bad year for kennel cough--lots of wet weather, no really brutal freezing winter and lots of warmth along with the rain. So kennel cough has had a real field day this year.

Good thoughts out to dear old Hattie, though. It's no fun and can get bad with the older flat faces.
