We have a 9 year old male puggle. When he pees, he dribbles still after he has finished his pee. It dribbles like he is peeing again, but not as forceful. Kind of like a drippy faucet. He doesn't have any issues about going potty. He does LOVES his water, and will try to drink as much as he can, but I think he has always been a fan of drinking water.
What would be causing the dribbling after he pees??

Has a UTI been ruled out? My vet put some of my oldsters on Proin to help with the dribbles. My vet also does yearly to bi-yearly senior panels to check the functions and get a baseline of different things.

Thank you so much for your advice. We have not ruled out a UTI on him. What type of medicine is Proin?? Are they on this medicine forever or until this dribbling corrects itself??
When do they consider Puggles/Pugs to be "seniors"??

I have known some dogs that stayed on Proin for a short time, and others that stayed on it for the rest of their lives. You would have to talk to your vet about it, because I don't know if it is the right medication for your dog. I just know that my vet has used it with many of our old pugs.

I think my vet starts doing the senior blood panels on pugs at the age of 7.

My first thought with dribbling in a male would be to check for bladder stones if these is no evicence of a UTI. Before you take him in to the vet, try to keep track of other things, like is he drinking more, urinating more, etc.

Proin in a brand name for Phenylpropanelamine. For many years this was marketed as an over the counter weight loss drug. It was finally taken off the market for humans because of side effects of elevated blood pressure. This can also be an issue for dogs on it as well. Here are some of the other potential side effects to look out for if you put your dog on Proin: Phenylpropanolamine stimulates a fight or flight response. This means that the following effects may be observed: rapid heart rate, elevation in blood pressure, and restlessness. Appetite loss or reduction may be a problem.

We had a male pug who dribbled urine that we put on Proin and he had a terrible allergic reaction in the form of hives. I seem to remember reading somewhere (or maybe my vet told me) that it is more effective in females than males, too. I would definitely rule out a UTI first. This supplement helped our boy when we realized that we couldn't give him the Proin anymore: http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/only-natural-pet-canine-bladder-control/999038.aspx

Good luck!

Yes, it is more effective in females, and even the testing was done mostly on females.

My Sara is approx. 15 years old and we just started her on Proin a few months back. She started having accidents and we ruled out utis, stones, tumors, etc. My vet had me put her on Proin and immediately that night, her accidents stopped. I heard about the side affect of increased heart rate but at her age, I want her ton be comfortable. I did try diapers on her but they would not stay on. I've also noticed a small amount of restless but with some cuddling, she relaxes herself.

If he is drinking a lot of water, has diabetes been ruled out? There are many things that could be causing this. I have my 15 year old pug on three different meds for bladder incontinence, but his is due to having no more muscle control there from being hit by a car so many years ago. (the reason he came into rescue) Proin, Bethanocal and one more we added recently that I can't think of.

And I swear by www.peekeeper.com - have three of them and they have saved my sanity!

I think you need to determine the cause before trying Proin.

Yes, I agree about determining the cause. I also second peekeepers. Peachy didn't have hers for very long before she went to the bridge, but it did work great.
