Izzy Again!
Izzy had an antibiotic resistant skin infection a few months ago and we were able to get rid of it after several weeks of different antibiotics, salve and special shampoo. Now she has a UTI that won't go away. We went Friday for a sterile sample to send off to the lab. The vet fears it will be antibiotic resistant also. Please keep us in you thoughts and prayers that we will be able to get rid of the infection again.

Re: Izzy Again!
Good luck! My foster Simon was diagnosed with an antibiotic resistant bacteria in his bladder earlier this year & he is just finishing up his FOURTH course of special antibiotics. It's been quite the ordeal. Hopefully Izzy's is easier to knock out.

Boy do I have experience with this!
My girl pug, Tobey, had recurrent UTI's for over a year. The bacteria strain was MRSP (related to MRSA). Only one antibiotic could be used to treat it, and we had to have it compounded at a special pharmacy. The medicine was disgusting.
Anyway, after months of traditional treatment, and no improvement, I took her off ALL medications. I boosted her immune system and gave her probiotics. I was very strict on her diet, etc. Six months later, she had a UTI still, but it was in the normal bacteria range. The MRSP was gone. It was amazing! In fact, the lab that was doing her cultures (every month or so) decided to use her case for a study. :)
Sometimes it just takes much, much longer on the medicine than vets will initially prescribe. And, I don't ever waste time on a UA. I always do the culture & sensitivity, because I want to know the exact bacteria and how to treat it.
Re: Izzy Again!
Thank you. Izzy's main problem is that taking Atopica for the last 5 years has taken a toll on her immune system. Unfortunately, taking her off is not an option.

Have you tried something to support / boost her immune system to help with the atopica? It's so hard to find the right thing to do that can help with everything, I know.
The probiotics I have been using are the ones from B Naturals (berte's). I keep wanting to switch, because the shipping is ridiculous and I hate when I run out before I reorder.. but, I am not very confident about using anything else.

I don't have any advice, just that we are in the same boat with Sophie, she's been on Atopica about as long as well. Hope Izzy can get this cleared up!

I hope Issy gets better soon!

I stuck with Honest Kitchen, but switched exclusively to Keen for her. I know it has grains (oats), but it has the lowest phosphorus ratio, and lower protein than the other formulas. I then added in the probiotics from Berte's, fish oil, a berry blend supplement from Solid Gold, and just stayed very, very strict about her diet. Basically a clean diet, no processed treats, etc. Increased water and increased time outside to pee.
I had her rechecked again last month, and she was 100% infection free. I'll check again at the end of this month and see where she stands.

I haven't tried that and unfortunately it has chicken liver powder and she is very allergic to chicken. At one time I tried her on the supplement Nupro because I had so much luck with Aggy on it but Izzy couldn't stomach it and would throw it right back up. She is on fish oil and I'd like to try her on a berry supplement as well. Can you tell me what amounts you are using or is the info on the bottle?
She is on Natural Balance Duck and Potato food/treats and other than the occasional tomato she sneaks off my bush and buffalo bully sticks once in awhile she doesn't get anything else.

Re: Izzy Again!
The berry blend is by Solid Gold.

I've ordered it from Amazon and bought it locally. Just 1/2 tsp twice a day is what I was doing, but I've cut back to once a day now. Once you clear things up, you can reduce the useage of this stuff to a maintenance routine. Be warned though, if your dog is prone to oxilate (rather than struvite), this is not a good supplement.
