Has anyone had a pug with canine PLE? My pug, Ivy, was just diagnosed with this on Friday and I am devastated. No cure. Being treated with steroids which don't seem to be helping all that much. Won't eat, has the poops, drinking excessive amounts of water which is leading to excessive urination, most inside unfortunately and very lethargic. I am looking so some suggestions on how to make her more comfortable if that is even possible.

Canine Protein Losing Enteropathy Empty PLE

Post  Miss Pugg 4/1/2012, 9:56 pm

Nasty disease. My 11 year old Boston Terrier, Jasmine, has been fighting this for almost two years. Her former vet never figured it out but the new vet was right on it. She was given Prednisone by the old vet which evidently caused Cushings Disease. She also has Lymphangiectasia and IRS (irritable bowel syndrome). At one time with her former vet, she was on 13 pills a day! Now she's on nothing but a change in diet. She did eat Royal Canin allergy (rabbit) but too high fat so now she's on Purina HA (I think it's that, we're just back from a busy trip and I'm not sure about it). Her weight had gone down from 14 pounds when rescued to a nasty 9 lbs. but she's going up again and last month gained .07 of a lb. He tests her blood monthly, esp. careful about albumin and protein. I really don't know much more to tell you but Blanche can give you more information. All this extra stuff I wrote about her probably doesn't involve your dog at all. I'm very glad I found the new vet about 6 or 8 months ago....

There is a support forum for owners with dogs that have PLE--especially lymphangiectasia which is the most common. Worth checking out as these folks are living with it and can give you tested advice: http://savelouie.com/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=9

Here's a link, mostly relating to Wheatens who are very prone to PLE and PLN. Might be helpful: http://wheatenguy.tripod.com/ple1.html

We've had two dogs with PLE and both did very well on the vet diet for Lymphagiectasia.

Welcome to the forum, I'm so sorry it;s under anything less than happy circumstances. I have heard of this disease but don't have any experience. I'm glad you've been given some good advice. Sending out the very best to you and your Puggy.

Thanks for the response. It's comforting to know that Jasmine has survived the disease for two years. I am not sure how old Ivy is as she was a rescue but we estimate between 13 and 15. The dog oncologist we are seeing told me that steroids were the only treatment and I am going to have a discussion with her about that today. I had been feeding her IVD duck and potato since I got her 7 years ago and the vet told me on Friday that it was a high protein food. However, she will not eat it now. For the weekend I have cooked her chicken, egg and rice. Rice to help harden her stool as even on the steroids it is still completely liquid. I have gotten alot of information from other in forums and blogs which has been great as I now what questions I need to be asking the oncologist today. I am definitely going to ask her about specific dog foods for this disease and if I need to continue to cook her high protein foods that is what I will do. She weighed 19.4 lbs two weeks ago and now weighs 17.8 lbs. She is beginning to look malnourished.

What do you do with Jasmine during the day while at work? I have come home to giant messes. She is thirsty all the time so is drinking excessive amounts of water which is leading to excessive urination, in some instances almost every hour. Not to mention the very loose stools! I have tried pee pads, but she has not yet grasped that concept. Canine Protein Losing Enteropathy 609723

I just wanted to send good thoughts to you and Ivy. I had a pug that had this, secondary to her severe IBD, and a ton of other medical issues. Unfortunately, she had so many things going on that we couldn't stabilize her long enough for me to be able to research or treat this component of it. But, this board has a wealth of information in its members, and I am glad that you will be able to get support from that.

Canine Protein Losing Enteropathy Empty PLE

Post  Miss Pugg 4/3/2012, 8:23 pm

I'm retired (or tired I should say) and am home most of the time. She stays in her crate when I'm not here as she tends to wet on the floor when running loose. Her stools at first were very liquid, never did firm up, and some had blood in them. By the time the new vet saw her, he immediately did loads of tests (her albumin was very low and something else). I gave her monthly shots of B12 (which I still do) altho the vet doesn't think much of that. Her constant urination has stopped, thank dog, but she has a huge appetite still. She has from 4 to 6 BM's a day so she doesn't gain much weight altho the .07 oz,. last month was hopeful. She's a bit more playful and energetic now too. She's a 11 year old puppy mill rescue and I've had her about 6 years. Luckily she could never have pups so they gave her to rescue. It's cost a small fortune but she's worth every penny of it. I hope your Pug improves daily. It's a really slow process at this stage of the game. Best of luck.

We have been battling (with what must be a mild form?) of PLE with our pug, Tulo, for the past year. We really never knew he had a problem until we went to get a dental cleaning done and they did a blood test before and found his albumin to be low. Since then, we have gotten him on steroid treatments, a low fat diet of Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat dry food and Azathioprine every other day. This has helped to keep his stools solid and keep his albumin levels around 1.8. The highest his albumin has gotten is 2.2. He is almost 30 lbs, so he hasn't lost weight, but the steroid treatments and lack of exercise due to a collapsing trachea has made it hard to lose the extra weight he probably should lose. We just found out yesterday that he does have a collapsing trachea, so things have been a bit rough. He seems very uncomfortable when he has his coughing attacks, especially when he exerts himself. Going up the stairs is a challenge. We have him on a steroid and cough suppressant, which we are hoping will help. The steroid will probably help with the PLE as well.

I am so sorry for others that are dealing with this too. I didn't realize how mild a form of PLE he must have from reading the other posts. I wish you all luck in dealing with this.

I can't figure out what year it was when I wrote about Jasmine's PLE and her other health issues but she passed away June 16, 2012, from possibly a heart attack or a blood clot to the brain. She was doing OK with the PLE so her death was very unexpected. She was only 11 years old and I miss her so much. She was pretty special but I'm thankful she had 5 happy years with me, away from that awful puppy mill. Good luck with your pooch!!!

I am going through this with one of my pugs, Mr. Mac. Over a period of about 2 years he would be going along fine, then start have diarrhea. Twice he went to the vet and got antibiotics, which did help and he would return to normal stools. I would gradually switch foods and things would be good for 4-6 months. Then it would start all over again. He was able to maintain his weight for the most part. Starting about 1 year ago, he began losing weight. He went from 18lbs to 12lbs over 4 months and was at a point where he had constant diarrhea. Off to the regular vet, who tried a few things and then referred me to a specialist.

I took him to a specialty vet internist and Mr. Mac had an intestinal scope and biopsy, he had dropped to 9lbs at this point. Blood work was sent to Texas A&M for a detailed analysis. He was diagnosed with IBD, inflammatory bowel disease. He was also severely low on B12. The vet gave Mr. Mac a steroid that is normally for humans with this disease, budesonide, that we have to have compounded at a local company. It is $40 per month. Mr. Mac has been eating Royal Canine Lowfat Gastrointestional Health, as was mentioned by someone else. He also had B12 shots once a week for a month, and then every month since then. Mac has done great, he went from 9lbs to 14lbs from Feb. to July.

Unfortunately, Mac has had a few set backs here and there. If he gets into anything other than his food or misses one pill he goes back to diarrhea and it takes up to 1 week to get back to normal. Right now he is really struggling and has lost weight, back to 12lbs. He has refused to eat his dog food and drinks water like crazy. A vet dietitian is creating a diet for him that will be similar to the Royal Canine, but tastier. The vet also added in a new antibiotic, tylosin, to be sprinkled on his food. It is a yellow powder that is very bitter, and Mac does not like it.

Mac stopped eating two days ago, and the vet suggested chicken and rice. He ate chicken last night, but of course eating leads to more diarrhea, and the cycle starts again. I am taking him back in today to see if he can do anything to help Mac get back on top of this again as he is really in bad shape today.

Canine Protein Losing Enteropathy Empty Low Albumin- 10 yr old pug

Post  MSettle09 10/20/2013, 3:47 pm

I am currently going through this very battle with my little guy.  We have yet to pinpoint the exact cause of the low albumin (initially 1.8, now 1.4,) but after reading these posts, I suspect that this is the cause.  He has had diarrhea which we have been treating and the albumin continues to drop.  I'm hopeful he will respond to the special diet.  Poor guy has been through so much in his 10 years.  Born with liver shunt, had Melanoma on his eye 2 years ago and now this.  Thanks for all the posts about this topic and how it has affected your pugs.  It has been very helpful.  Fingers crossed we get an exact cause for the problem soon, before it becomes too critical.
