Do we have MJs thesis here? We really need a copy of that if we don't!

Amen! By the way, I learned something today. Penny has been boot-scooting and butt-licking, so when we went to the dogtor yesterday, I asked them to check for butt juice. Her anal glands were completely empty. It seems that the allergies made her butt more sensitive - no boot scooting or licking since her baf.

Yea, Nell scoots more when her allergies are flaring up. She hasn't quite mastered scratching her butt with her paw!Pugsaunt wrote:Amen! By the way, I learned something today. Re: ANAL GLANDS
Toddy has a scabby tail right now. Vet thinks it was possibly caused by anal glands bothering him, causing him to try to bite at them, and getting his tail instead. So they were cleaned out yesterday and he is on antibiotics for his scabby tail.
So if they keep trying to get at their tails, it could be well worth checking out the anal gland situation. (Note that Toddy was not constantly trying to get at his tail, at least not in my sight and I am pretty vigilant about what he gets up to, so any sign of biting at the tail is worth investigating. You can't see the scabs on his tail as they are inside the curl, you can only feel them, or see them if you uncurl the tail.)

Re: ANAL GLANDS
Chester has had an anal glad erupt. If an infection is setting in, if you look at the butthole, you will usually be able to see a swollen anal gland (look at around 7 o'clock and 5 o'clock from the butthole). That's a dead-on telltale sign that something is going on. For that, I would go to the vet and have the experts take a look and not try to express yourself -- you may make it worse.
Also, based on my one time trying to self express an anal gland, I would like to point out that when the gland expresses, the juice can "pop" out like a giant zit, not necessarily ooze gently out of the gland. To be safe, do NOT stand directly in the line of fire of the gland or you may just end up getting that stuff all over your eye, your hair, your carpet, your bedspread . . . and trust me, it's been more than 8 years since that happened and I still shudder when I think about it.

Re: ANAL GLANDS
I work at a vets office so I am constantly doing anal glands.
I usually will take a damp paper towel and kind of use it as a shield because sometimes it definitely squirts.
On me. On the other techs. On the wall... lol

And that is the reason that I never attempt to do them myself!
Re: ANAL GLANDS
I can usually get Nell's good enough by doing it externally. I just hold a paper towel back there to catch it. I think to do it externally though you have to have a pretty good idea of where the glands are already, on your particular dog so you don't hurt them. I did hers internally in the beginning.

This is a bi-weekly routine in my house! Thanks to MJ's instructions! I always use a paper towel over the hole to block the squirting. My hubby and I have it down to an art now!

Angie, do you add canned pumpkin to the pugs' food? It really cut down how often I have to do anal glands here. If you don't use it yet, try to add a couple teaspoonfuls to their evening meal every night. They think they are getting a treat, and in a month or so you might notice a difference on the read end.

They get canned pumpkin in the morning and coconut oil in the evening! Without pumpkin they get us within a week! Pumpkin lets us wait every 2 weeks or so to do it! Bleck!
