Dawn soap

Post  Miss Pugg on 7/28/2010, 1:00 pm

Having a spell of fleas & the owner of a pet store (who had worked at Humane Societies in the South) told me the best way to get rid of them was to wash them in Dawn soap. I had also read this on other dog boards. I had used Frontline and Sentinel in my quest to kill the little monsters. Jasmine had 3 baths in Dawn and the critters were stunned but still living after the baths. The Pugs also had the same situation. My vet asked me what I was using for a shampoo, told her and her eyes about popped out. She said the ingredients in Dawn were such that they immediately stripped out all the 'good' things (if there are good things) and the Frontline was washed away. I'm to put Frontline on them again tonight after waiting for 24 hours and to use Sentinel later. Due to my knee surgery, we haven't been able to bomb the house and yard but we do have all the stuff needed. I want us and the dogs out of the house that night and I don't know what to do with dogs with fleas. My friend who has the boarding kennel would not appreciate getting afflicted *G*. She also reminded me that the folks saving critters in the oil spill use Dawn to get rid of the oil.

I used the Dawn Soap trick on one of my fosters that had fleas. The trick is that you combine equal parts dawn and water, and put it on the dog DRY. If you wet the dog first, the fleas use the water as a barrier between it and the soap.

My pugs don't have fleas (touch wood) but I use Dawn when I bath them 3 or 4 times a year. That infrequently won't strip the oils out of their coats. Apparently Dawn is used by many show dogs.

I was just reading up on fleas and while bombing the house is a good idea, it doesn't get under the furniture. I would also take some flea powder and sprinkle under the couches, chairs and beds or sprinkle Borax.

The Frontline should be killing the adult fleas while the Sentinel will protect against heartworms and will stop the reproductive cycle of the flea. The problem you are having now is that the fleas are probably dying that are on the dogs but newer ones are coming out of the carpet or even the grass outside.

Confortis is also an oral pill that can be given to kill adult fleas and lasts a month. There are also pills called Capstar that can be given daily to kill adult fleas.
