Balding pug Empty Balding pug

Dumping has been dx with some kind of food allergies. We have her on an elim diet. This month she is only eating natural balance sweet potato and vennison, which I am changing overf to zwipack vennison as soon as it arrives because she has yeast issues too, esp in her ears and in her nose fold. She has had multiple ear infections and recurrent pyroderma. She is on a round of abx, special skin wipes and ear wash.

She is a single coat pug, she has always had bald underarms and lower belly and just a thinner coat in general. He coat on the top of her body is fine, but her underbelly, arm pits, lg pits, rump and chest are getting really bare. It is kind of freaky to pick her up and touch skin. It is not patchy, she has been checked for mange already. I made sure her blankets are only washed with a squirt of dawn dish soap and I rinse twice, so it is not laundry detergent. We go back to the allergist/derm in 2 weeks to start re-introducing foods. I don't know what could be causing the thinning/baring of her underbelly fur. Any suggestions?

eta: she isn't itching or scratching in any way....so strange!

Can I pass her off as a chineese crested? Laughing

I had to laugh at the idea of her being a chinese crested pug - with the tuft of hair on her forehead & curly tail. Now there's an image!!

I don't have any advice for you - hopefully Blanche will be able to share her wisdom, as I know Tank is super sensitive w/ allergies.

No experience with this but it's obviously something you need to get on top of before you DO have a new Pug sub-species! Yes, Blanche is our resident skin issues expert.

How old is Dumpling?

My pugs, two out of three, have gotten a little thinner coat on the underside as they have aged. And, Ichiro has lost the hair on the front of his chest where his harness rubs.

Does the skin look or feel different? Is it black? Clammy? Have a smell? Any sores?

She is going to be one this Aug 18th. No sores, no darkening, no roughness, no sores, no itching, no patchyness...just neked.

I think you doing an elimination diet is good. Do you give her any treats? You may want to cut out her treats if you do. Most treats have corn, wheat and/or soy which can cause allergies. I just got some that are yogurt/banana flavored. I've had to stop feeding my pug chicken, beef and pork as a protein. It's been hard to find treats without any of this in it along with no wheat, corn or soy.

Blanche will have some good feedback on allergies. She's been through all of this with her pugs.

My pug Gracie does not have any hair on her chest, stomach, inner legs, elbows, etc. We've had her skin tested numerous times and have not found anything. I did read online that Melatonin is good for hair loss so I may try that to see if it works (Blanche, do you know anything about this?) Gracie recently did start having allergies which my vet said is environmental but had nothing to do with the loss of hair on her chest. She started loosing hair on her back hip area and had a skin infection but we have since gotten that all under control so far (thank goodness!).

Have you had her thyroid checked? My vet said that can cause hair loss. Good luck with everything. Allergies can be hard to figure out.....

It is the saddest thing ever, sadly no treats except for raw green beans and her own kibble. He suggested rice cakes, but because of her yeast, I am chosing to avoid the grains and starches...she used to get lamb jerky and lamb bones to chew on until the derm nixed them. She was never a moocher, now she is mooching because she wants treats...beans are not cutting it...I was thinking thyroid, but she has no weight issues ( too skinny, too chubby). Cushings is out too, she doesn't have any of the other involvements and her hair loss is uniform. She did get spayed in mid June and that is when I started noticing it more, but then again that is when her allergies really started to flair.

Well, if you are going to do the elimination diet, you can't really do it with kibble as it has too many ingredients. And I've had several dogs that were allergic to pumpkin and sweet potato. Also if she is getting yeasty at all, then you definitely don't want to be feeding pumpkin or sweet potato as sugar feeds yeast.

Your best bet if you want to do the elimination diet without going to raw is start with some form of canned food that is 95% meat. Wellness makes several. Essentially, elimination diet means you eliminate everything but one thing from the diet. and then add things in as you go. Basically, you need to find a protein she can eat, then add one thing at a time to that. Here is Hilary's post about elimination diets:

You could try these formulas--again, they have rice in them so that could be an issue:

But here is the canned I would suggest--at the bottom are the mixers and toppers:

Evo also makes some 95% meat canned food:

Have you ruled out other reasons for the alopecia? Here's a pretty decent run down of cause for hair loss in dogs:

Blanch, Thank you so much for giving me options. My derm /allergist dismissed grain allergies, but I have seen a difference by removing most of them.

I will go browsing the feed store again. I just found raw dehydrated treats for her..it was an exciting day in our house!!!
