Jasmine, please help

Post  Miss Pugg on 5/3/2011, 8:39 pm

Besides all her problems with PLE and IBD and allergies, Jasmine now appears today to have a UTI. We must leave town very early tomorrow to go to a relative's funeral many miles away and have no way to get her to the vet. I'm calling from there to make appt. for Thursday but in the meantime, she won't get better. Do any of you have any idea what I can do for her tonight and for my dog sitter to do tomorrow? Husband is sick, I don't drive outside of our little town and Jasmine just keeps wetting and showing blood, andagain and again. Can you think of anything I might have on hand that would work for her? I'm very tired and not thinking well. I have Metronidoze (I can't read the label clearly) and Cephalexin 250 MG. Both are elderly meds but would either of them do in a pinch? Advice most welcome. I'll Google them too.

I can't help with the medicine part, but is it possible that your pet sitter could take her to the vet tomorrow? Or does your vet make housecalls that he/she could come to the house? Just a couple thoughts off the top of my head. Hope you get it figured out and Jasmine is feeling better soon.

Joanne:
Metronidazole won't do anything for a UTI, but Cephalexin is used for them.

I'd push fluids as much as possible and encourage her to drink and pee often. You could try putting Apple Cider Vinegar in her food--1/2 teaspoon in her food each meal, I think.

However, you're dealing with a dog with some complicated medical issues so I would be really leery about trying stuff without a vet having seen her.

Joanne, I'm sorry to say this - but you really need to get her to a vet. They need to do a culture on her urine to know what kind of bacteria it is, to prescribe the right antibiotics to knock it out.

Metrodiazanole probably won't do it - it isn't a broad spectrum antibiotic, though the Cephalexin (I think) is more of a broad spectrum antibiotic.

Can your petsitter get her in? If not, I would be inclined to take care of her needs with the vet vs. a funeral. That's a tough call, but Jasmine is still alive and needs care... (I hope I don't offend you by saying that, I'm not trying to be offensive).

Jasmine

My dogsitter is taking her into the vet she works for (brother of my new vet but in a different city). Jasmine is miserable, stops every few feet to try to urinate, can't do it, tries again, no luck. I have a great dog sitter who is going above and beyond what is generally needed. I am worried sick. The funeral is for a relative I've known for 78 years and his unexpected death at 97 is a blow to our family, even at his age, thought he would live forever. My daughter starts chemo tomorrow at MD Anderson too to add to the mix. Thanks for your suggestions! If hubby wasn't so miserable, we'd go to the ER in Iowa but he can hardly see to drive from weepy eyes and coughing and misery.

No advice, just stopping in to say I'm sorry for all the stuff going on and I am very glad you have a great petsitter!

I am sorry Joanne. I am glad your dogsitter is taking her in. I am sorry about the passing of your relative, and I am sending lots of good thoughts your daughter's way, and your husband's way too. You have a very full plate. Peachy, my hospice pug, is still battling UTI's after 2 years of care. Right now she is on Baytril because Clavamox doesn't knock them out for her. Her culture came back as staph, so she is on antibiotics for 2 weeks.

Jasmine

Goodness, I'd like to have a healthy dog! Seems like most of us have an ailing dog or two. Those stubborn UTI's are nasty. I hope that's all Jasmine has. It's generally Willow who gets them, not Jasmine. I think of the old, old days (40's and 50's) when dogs got a shot or two maybe and saw the vet otherwise once or twice in its lifetime. Tomorrow is going to be a hard day! Glad one of my daughters will be with me and hope DH recovers fast.

It seems like it's always something doesn't it?

I'm so sorry for your family's loss, and hope your DH is feeling better. I am keeping your daughter in my thoughts through her treatment. And I hope Jasmine kicks her UTI quickly (poor girl!).

Hang in there.

It's always something, isn't it? I'm sorry for your loss Joanne. I'm glad your dogsitter is getting her to the vet. Starting meds before doing a culture can really screw up the results. I hope she gets better soon. You're going through a really tough time at the moment, I feel for you. hug dog

Jasmine

Post  Miss Pugg on 5/4/2011, 9:14 pm

Glad I listened to you folks & didn't give her any medicine before her vet trip. We got to the funeral on time (near Chicago) and was pleased to hear my dog sitter telling me Jasmine had a UTI again. For her brief visit today, it was $303 to add to the $900 last week, ouch. It's hard to deal with on Social Security but I won't let her go. Her former vet told me not many people would devote so much to her care and that Jasmine was a lucky dog. No, I'm lucky to have the little sweetie. We got to visit with relatives today that we only see at funerals and while it was a sad occasion, it was great to be with friends. My cousin was 98, not 97 as I thought, & was married to his wife, now widow, for 78 years! She's doing OK but still in shock about his sudden death. Thanks to you all, time to cuddle Jasmine.
