Eye crusties

Post  Tyson&LuLu'sMom on 7/6/2011, 11:39 am

I've noticed in the last couple days, each time he wakes up Mac has crust all around the rim of his right eye-the eye he's blind in. It's not goopy or runny, just crusty after he's been sleeping-and only on the one eye.

No other issues, so I'm wondering if this would be an ophthalmologist visit (the one who performed the eye procedure a year and a half ago), or just a regular vet visit? Tear production and all that was normal after the procedure, and she didn't even recommend a daily drop for maintenance.

Any thoughts?

Does the eye look red at all? Is it swollen, squinty?

For me, I would think a regular vet visit first, but then, I have not had to deal with any serious eye issues (knock on wood).

Nope, nothing out of the ordinary. It's the one he's blind in, so it doesn't have that shiny-ness that his left eye has, but that's normal.
I called the ophthalmologist and they can get us in Friday morning...at 6:45am! Shocked

He can still get a underlying infection in the eye, even if it isn't a working eye. Gus is blind in both eyes and he get crusties at night in his "big" eye. I use a over the counter gel to help it stay lubricated, but we just use a warm wet cloth to clean it out/off. The eye specialist said that anything I did for his eyes, was or me, not for Gus.... course if it's goopy he also will rub it off on the walls and furniture, so I prefer to think that I am helping a little!

My pug growing up who had dry eye started with crusties and goopyness. If you haven't done a recheck or a visit to the optho in the last 1.5 yrs, I'd say going straight there wouldn't hurt. It's what you're comfortable with, though.
