Snifter's cut paw Empty Snifter's cut paw

Post  Snifter&Toddy 7/18/2011, 7:08 am

I was nearly home from a walk with Snifter yesterday and noticed he suddenly became very unwilling to walk. He was favouring his rear right paw and would walk 3 steps at a time then stop. So I carried him home and set him down in the pug room which has white tiles on the floor. Very soon it began to look like we were in Sweeney Todd's. I got Dave to hold him while I had a look. It was very hard to see what the problem was as it was bleeding profusely. I cleaned it off with hibiscrub and boiled water. Tried to bandage it - hopeless. Tried to put a boot on it - hopeless. Anyway by this time Snifter was getting really stressed and Dave was having a hell of a job holding him. You would not believe how strong Snifter is when he means business.

So I put him to bed in the pug room and watched for the bleeding to stop, which it did quite quickly after that.

This morning when he went out to potty he was fine except when he tried to go on a gravel area. The movement made the wound bleed a bit but only a drop or two; nothing like yesterday.

I had him up on the big bed and when he went to sleep I was able to get a good look at it. It's as if something has taken a slice off the pad. It's not a stitchable shape of wound but I am at least satisfied that there is nothing in it. There's often pieces of glass on our road because it is narrow and cars keep smashing their wing mirrors together. Obviously I avoid areas of glass I can see, but I suspect it was a piece of glass that cut him.

I rang the vet and they said there was probably nothing they could do unless it gets infected or he licks at it (which he isn't doing) so I just need to limit him to potty walks only and keep an eye on it. They also said it could take a while to heal up.

Here's a couple of pics - it's quite hard to see but the pad has been sliced off through the whole black layer and you can see the pink underneath in the centre of the cut. It's the second pad from the top in the pics.

My poor baby. I can't believe he didn't shriek when it happened.

what a bad boo boo!

I have found my tigger's paw pads burned off - from skidding as he played fetch on a paved surface - which of course made me feel terrible...

But I suspect your fella will be alright... and I am glad there is nothing LODGED in there!

a hug for you and pat for him...

Poor little man Snifter's cut paw 335895 .
Pad wounds are terrible because of their location more than anything and "re-popping" open is a terrible effect.
My sisters Rottie sliced a good chunk of his once. She was horrified and my BIL is scared of blood so they called me to come help. Oh good heavens! was all I could think ,especially being a dog big enough to EAT ME. Shocked
I called the vet and they told me the same thing yours did.
We got him down and since she didn't have any blood stop and the porch was starting to look like someone had comitted a crime, I washed it up to excess and packed it it with cornstarch(the only thing we had at the time) and bandaged it with wound pads and vet wrap for horses. Being such a big boy, it was difficult to keep it from re-opening and indeed it did take many many wrap changes but he was none the worse for wear within several days.
Hopefully Mr Snifter will be as good as new very shortly.

Having a slice taken off the back of my calf, i can tell you that kind of injury doesn't hurt much when it happens. I was rollerblading and the only way i noticed i sliced my leg open was because a couple of bystanders started freaking out lol.

Hope it heels fast! Paw injuries are the WORST!

Poor Snifter! It's amazing they don't cry out right away from an injury like that.

Poor guy! I hate pad wounds, they are hard to treat. I had a Bullmastiff that would chew them raw due to allergies and then his big a$$ would limp around after. He didn't get as much sympathy cause he was doing it to himself! I am sure he will heal swiftly!

Foot injuries bleed like the dickens! Poor little guy. Sounds like you and Dave administered great first aid to a difficult patient. It looks sore and nasty, but very clean. Hope he heals quickly!

Poor Snifter! Please give him a big hug and tell him that I am sending positive thoughts and prayers across the pond that his paw heals quickly. Snifter was one of my first crush pugs, and I do heart him a whole lot.

Yes, thank you Lex. You can still see a mark on the pad, but it is healing nicely and he is walking fine again.

Glad to hear Snifter's OK! I imagine healing a wound on the bottom of the foot would take a while, since it gets stepped on all the time.
