Pug panting question
I picked up my new pug today in Calgary. As a favor to the breeder I agreed to deliver a pug for her to Seattle. The breeder is driving home tonight (4 hr drive) and I can't reach her. But the female has been panting nonstop since we got her settled. We gave the pugs a bath (long story) and dried them off. The room is cool and she's had plenty of water. She seems perky and alert, a perfectly normal pug except for the panting. Nonstop for the last hour. Should I be worried? What can/should I to or try? Thanks in advance.

Re: Pug panting question
Liz, I'm no expert but barring a bona fide medical event, and given that you are in a cool place right now, it sounds like anxiety. Have you had any luck calming her down yet?

None whatsoever. She's happy. Wagging her tail. Her face is a little warm but other than that no signs of anything serious. But she can't seem to stop panting even lying down.

Got through to her breeder. Supposedly it's anxiety. Any suggestions how to calm her? Should I get her crate from the car?

Was she okay in the crate on the way over? If so, yes, get the crate. It may be a more familiar environment for her. You can also try putting a sheet or blanket over the crate to make it more den like. She may be over stimulated.

Ugh. Getting the crate didn't seem to work. She got all bent out of shape by my leaving the room. I need to sleep. Any more suggestions? I don't have benadryl but I do have claritin. Could I give her a half of that? She seems to want to sleep but can't relax.

Damn Elizabeth. Do you know of ANY emergency vet anywhere in the U.S. you can call? Even your regular in California? It doesn't sound like a huge emergency, but it's going to make her miserable, not to mention yourself and DH! Of course these things happen in the middle of the night...

Re: Pug panting question
The breeder suggested I put ice in her crate and that worked. Ulysses is sleeping at my feet on the bed. Lola is in the bathroom in her crate. I dare not check on her for fear of waking her and inciting another panic attack. That's probably what it was I guess. Geez no good deed, right?

Re: Pug panting question
Glad she got calmer. FYI, do not give Claritin to calm, as it can be a stimulant--it's not the same type of antihistamine as Benadryl at all. I only take Benadryl (myself) at night; and I take Claritin during the day.

See if you can get your hands on some Rescue Remedy. If you're coming this way i can get you some, but if you're going the other way, see if you can make it to a Tail Blazers or something to get a bottle. Here's a list of their locations: http://www.tailblazerspets.com/tailblazers_contact.html Most should have RR but i'd call and ask for sure before you go out of your way.

Sounds like anxiety or excitement. When we got Koda a few days ago, he did the same thing and actually took ours to chill out and relax. It wasn't hot in here at all as we have some pretty good AC. Finally after a few ours he started to chill out and get used to his new surroundings.
Hope everything turns out to be okay!

Yep, anxiety for sure. Some new fosters pant for hours or even a full day before settling in. It just takes time.
Mandy is right, try and get some rescue remedy.
