What's the deal with paper eating?? **Update further down**

Post  MommaJones on 8/19/2011, 10:11 pm

Freddy Jones will gobble up kleenex, paper towels, napkins, etc, if he gets a chance. I usually keep a good eye on him. But today he has thrown up 5 paper towels. FIVE! I haven't been home much this past week, so I have no idea where/what he got ahold of. I've asked hubby, but he denies any knowledge. I unfolded the puked up towels, and they don't match the paper towels currently on the roll. So I know it had to have happened at least a couple of days ago. It hasn't affected his appetite at all...he's still a pig. I'm waiting to see if supper comes back up along with any more paper towels. I just don't get the paper eating obsession.

Hahaha, many pugs have serious kleenex and tissue addictions. My Tobey has a serious problem, the others only occasionally indulge.

Good that he's throwing them up, weird that you think they may be from a few days ago.

How's the poops looking?

Vivian has been obsessed with tissue, napkins and TP since birth. If I have company over I make sure to use cloth napkins. I had to raise all our toilet paper holder up a few more inches than she can get to.

She once took a Kleenex from my mothers nose while she was blowing it, bonus for her!

I have never been able to break her of this.

KC has a thing for paper towels ... he'll snatch them any way he can. When I go to retrieve them ... he is likely as not to growl at me.
DiNo likes them to shred and play with.
They cannot taste good ... no idea what the fascination is.

Poop appears normal. He threw up one more piece of paper towel last night around 1am. At least that one appeared to be only a partial piece, not a whole paper towel. He's eating and drinking normally, but he's obviously not 100%. I think as long as he poops/pees/eats/drinks, I'll hold off trying to find a vet. Trying to find one around here on a weekend is tough. Hopefully by tomorrow or Monday, he'll have gotten all the paper out of his system and be back to normal. He doesn't seem to be in pain. Anything I should be watching for?

Penny is obsessed with kleenex. The grosser, the better. That is why all of our trash cans either have lids or are under tables so she can't knock them over. I think I'd be ok as long as he is eating, drinking, and pooping normally. You'd think that this would stop him from going after paper towels, but, then I remember Peg's former foster Gidget and the second Brillo pad she ate.

Update

Post  MommaJones on 8/21/2011, 4:41 pm

FJ has had 2 poops today that at the end have had a thin mucusy skin over it. I've done some googling and it seems as if this is a 'normal' response to an irritated bowel. I'd say the paper towels would definitely be irritating. I was wondering if anyone here has had this weird poop. Should I back off on feeding him to let his tummy rest?

I'd be inclined to give his tummy a break and do a rice/chicken thing for a bit. And yes, that is a normal response to an irritated bowel in humans, too. Hugs to the handsome Mr. Jones.

Yup ... in horses, too. It is a very basic GI response in mammals to protect the intestines.
The Dapple Duo had 'off' poops for a bit after moving here. I chalked it up to stress, did some mild meals and they are back to normal.

Thanks gals! We're going bland for a few days and see how his tummy does with that.

We've had mucus poop before. I think it's wise to go bland for a bit and see how he goes.

Hope he's feeling better soon! Your post reminded me of when Bud used to grab the end of the toilet paper roll and take off with it. Annoying then but I sure do miss it now.
