?Blisters? on inside of ear flap?

Post  Tyson&LuLu'sMom on 8/29/2011, 9:53 am

Well it wouldn't be a normal week around here without a trip to the vet, so we're off tonight to have Mac's ears looked at.
The other night he started itching his "armpits" a lot, so I gave him some benadryl and a bath. I also noticed he had little blister-looking bumps on the inside of his ear flap-right ear only. Over the weekend they've started to get bigger, pop and crust over-and now he has a small patch on the inside of his left ear flap. The itching of the armpits has subsided a bit, but it's not completely gone. He's also had on-again off-again crustiness around his right eye...

Any clues as to what these blisters might be??

No ideas.. but interested to hear.. as *I* have a n itchy rash like that (not under my ear flaps, but on my knuckles, and inner forearms and waist (a little) -not in the pits, tg!- I was told it was poison ivy Suspect ... and prescribed an ointment... but I suspect a pill might do away with it better and faster!

Let us know please!

Could you get a picture?

Does it look anything like this?

If he's scratching at his ear or shaking it a lot, it could be a hematoma. They might drain it and tape it to his head if it's small. Not a huge deal.

I can try to hold the little wiggle worm and get a pic at lunch today. The pic you posted is a lot more smooth than what Mac has. Originally it looked like little puss filled blisters (almost like if you got a bad sunburn), and when they pop it crusts over.

Becky, what you are describing doesn't sound like a hematoma to me (Einstein had one and it was obvious that was what it was...very large blood filled ear). Dora has some blistering like what you are talking about but under her arms, not in her ears. This was back when her allergies were out of control and since we had her tested and stopped feeding her food she is allergic to they have not returned.

We're just getting rid of a bout of those with Toddy. If he gets them it is a sure sign he has an ear infection, so I suggest you get the vet to have a look down the ears.

I think your pugs just really like the vet's office. Maybe time to switch to a meaner vet, and they'll stop coming up with ways to visit the vet. Razz

Just kidding - those blisters kind of happen on Skeeter's belly and his underarms. They get puffy and inflamed, eventually they dry out and crust off. His are always when he's had exposure to grains or sometimes reactions to outside allergens.

They're hot spots on the inside flaps of his ears. The vet gave me some otomax to help with the inflammation and recommended benadryl or claritin at any signs of itching.

Good that the dogtor had a diagnosis, good that it is not worse, and bad that he is still itching. Hugs to you and Mac.

Sounds like pustules which are from allergies. Tilly used to get them on her stomach.

I am with the crowd that thinks they are like allergy hives.

I have never heard of a dog getting a hot spot where the hair was really sparse (like armpits or inside ears.)

But then again, your vet studied for years at veterinary school and I didn't. Unless something is lost in the translation? Here a "hot spot" is usually caused by moisture under fur, the dog scratches the itch and breaks the skin and the fungi and other microbes breed out of control, sort of like a tropical ulcer in humans.

I don't have any experience with hot spots at all. She basically explained it as a secondary infection to him scratching his ears with no real "treatment" other than to medicate/figure out why he was itching in the first place. His ear canals looked ok, so it's not an infection deep in the ears.
