Obese Pug.Should I follow feeding guideline on Hills WD dry food?

Post  skinlessdisc on 10/22/2014, 6:41 pm

Hi All,

This is my 1st post here.

I'm wondering if someone could advise on feeding guidelines for Pugs on Hills Scientific W/D Dry food.

Our Pug is obese(vet says and I suppose he does look it) at 10.6kg and should be below 8.5kg especially due to back problems and breathing issues.

He has been on this diet for 2 months and has not shed any weight. We are feeding him 190g a day which is the equivalent amount for a dog @ 9kg. Technically he should be loosing weight but he is not.

Are Pug metabolisms slower than standard dogs and if so should I reduce the amount I feed?

If anyone has had a similar problem please share.

Thanks in advance,
Wil  pug

Amounts on dog food bags are typically way higher than needed. I am feeding my pug 1/4 cup 2 times a day of Natural Balance Duck and Potato. It's hard to say how much you should be feeding because different foods have different calories in them but if he's not losing weight I would definitely lower the amount you are feeding him.

Our Freddie had to lose a pound or so, so I switched him to Health Extension Little Bits Lite dog food. The bag says to give him 1 cup a day, but we only give him 1/3 cup morning and afternoon. He lost the weight (gradually). I was worried that we were starving him, but his breeder assured me we weren't and also said she'd gotten him used to veggies when he was a puppy. He particularly liked green beans, so we've supplemented the reduced amount of kibble with a few spoonfuls of cooked green beans. They have minimal calories, but a good amount of fiber and bulk, and he loves them.

Our vet also said that the amount of food shown on the typical bag of dog food will be to maintain the dog's current weight. If you want to increase their weight, you have to increase the amount and if you want them to lose weight, you have to decrease the amount.

But when they look at you with those enormous eyes that say, "I'm STARVING, Mom" it is hard to hold firm.hug dog
