My poor wee man!!

Hi guys I'm new to the forum! I have a 3year old black pug who is my little baby!! He's called Charley! Sadly whilst playing in the garden on Sunday with our 2 other dogs charley punctured his eye and ended up having to be rushed to the emergency vet who operated to stop bleeding and sadly he lost his right eye! It was a very stressful traumatic day for him an us! He is home now and on anti biotics and loxicom pain relief and has the cone on his head to protect eye! I'm keeping him in a crate when he's alone to ensure he is out of harms way! I feel so helpless and sad for him I know he'll adjust I just feel sp bad for him As he looks so sad an bereffed and not his usual happy pug like self! Is there anything I can do to ensure he has a speedy recovery and is back to his happy one eyed self in no time!! Thanks Leanne x

Hi and welcome! Sorry it's under difficult circumstances. You've sadly experienced the reality of pug eyes - easily injured! Sounds like you're doing all the right things to help him recover. They do just fine with one eye, just make sure you have the vet check the other eye for PK (your vet will explain it) or entropian, which are conditions unfortunately very common in pug eyes and can severely affect their sight. You have to make sure the other eye is healthy and stays that way. We have MANY one-eyed pugs and nearly as many NO-EYED pugs that do amazingly well! Good luck with your little guy!

Welcome to PA, Leanne. I'm so sorry that Charley got himself hurt. Rona is right, pugs adjust very well to losing eyes. Better than humans do, I think.

I'm sorry to hear your story. However I am sure Charley will adjust just fine.

Honestly, he'll be fine. It just takes time. The important thing is to keep him from itching the stitches where the eye was. I have a no eyed pug--lost one eye in 2006 and last one in 2009. She was already blind and the eyes stopped producing tears. Anyone on this forum will tell you that Hazel is a competent as any fully sighted dog.

It may take some time for Charley to feel 100%, but it's rare for the loss of an eye to permanently impact a dog.

I'm sorry to hear about your Charley. Pugs and their eyes, I know. My Otto had a corneal ulcer a few summers ago from sticking his head into a hedge one evening on our walk (I think that was when it happened).

He had to wear a cone for almost a month and hated it, but I found I could bribe him to let me put it on by holding some chicken in my hand and putting the cone over my forearm. When he'd come for the chicken, I'd pull back and he'd put his head through the cone's opening to get the chicken. I also bribed him with chicken and turkey to put in the eye drops, ointments, and other meds he needed. When he sees an eye drop bottle now, he runs over, sits, and holds his head up - he learned well.

I know Charley will do well with the one eye; the most annoying thing will be the people who come over and say things like "oh,the poor little thing, how does he manage..." Sometimes sympathy can be really a drag, you know? (I had a blind dog, years ago, so I know).
