DHPP vaccine help! Empty DHPP vaccine help!

Post  nancypants 6/21/2012, 10:50 pm

Hi! I have a 3 1/2 year old pug who I *think* is up to date on his vaccines. However, we recently mved out of state and aren't able to access his previous medical records. We're boarding him soon and one of the things he needs to be current on is DHPP. I guess what I wonder is; will it effect him negatively if he gets his vaccine sooner than he was supposed to? Thanks so much! pug2

Hi and welcome! I would have his titers checked by a vet and go with their recommendation.

Welcome.

You really don't want to overdose on vaccines.

I really would make the effort to contact your former vet and get the details first. They will likely be happy to send a confirmation letter for a small fee. If you can't do that, then a titre test at another vet will measure the antibodies that he has and whether he is adequately protected.

Having said that, I am aware that most strays will just get a set of new shots before a shelter adopts then out, most of the time there is no drama, but personally I would not like to take the risk with one of my own.

Thanks, all! What a great site with a dandy bunch of helpful folks! I managed to sweet talk my old vet into faxing it today (must've gotten the only lady that's ALWAYS in a bad mood yesterday) and all is well! Good thing, too. He had just had his vaccine last year...not due til 2014! Thanks to all y'all for the speedy reply. Take care!!!
