Behaviour problem? Empty Behaviour problem?

Post  Old Mother Hubbard 7/20/2010, 8:16 pm

So all tests are back for Wellie. No urinary infections stones etc. No Diabetes or cushings. We are leaning towards behavioural obsessive water drinking. Vet wants to put him on Proin. If this is a behaviour problem how in the heck to I start to correct it. ? Wouldnt I be better trying to solve the problem rather than just give him Proin? Any ideas where to begin?

Is Proin an anti-anxiety med? I'd give it a shot to see if it calms him down and breaks the cycle. Maybe he can be weaned off it later on. I'm glad there's nothing physiologically wrong!

Sue, I'm no expert but Proin is most commonly used for urinary incontinence. So I'm not sure why it's being suggested for Wellie to deal with obsessive drinking. Here's a blurb on it:

I'd seriously query CDS, maybe, depending on his age. Or think about an anti-anxiety drug. There was a great article in the Whole Dog Journal about OCD in dogs.

Here's a link from the Merck Vet Manual on OCD/behavioural issues with dogs. It's pretty interesting:
