Getting used to the Dremel Empty Getting used to the Dremel

Post  Katie & Stella 9/17/2010, 9:53 pm

How do I get Stella used to the Dremel? I haven't used it yet because I don't want to freak her out. She's so good when I cut and file her nails I'm afraid to scare her off with it. Any tips would be great. Thanks!

I tried to take it slow with Toby. I would turn it on and hold it in his general area, without ever touching him with it. Then give him some cheese. I would also touch it to his nails when not turned out. And give him some cheese. Gradually working up to actually using it on him. And give him some cheese. In reality, none of this worked for me. Toby is hyper-sensitive about his nails (which is why we tried the Dremel). I put a soft e-collar on him when I Dremel, and then feed him cheese. This keeps him from biting at me while I do and seems to keep him a bit calmer.

Well, my Skeeter becomes the exorcist when his nails get messed with. His chosen repellent? He'll pee all over us while he screams and tries to bite.

Yeah, there is no saving him on this one. My hubby wraps a towel around him, and holds him, while I dremel.

Of course we reward, reward, reward....but, that doesn't seem to help much.

I honestly believe is that the most important thing is that you be happy while handling the Dremel, or at least releaxed and calm.

If you are nervous that she is going to freak out, then she will pick up on those nerves and maybe feel threatened by the evil horror machine that is alarming you, if that makes sense.

So you now have an excuse for a pre-Dremel margarita! 🍸 Laughing
