Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
This isn't one of my pugs, but on my aunt's border collie. Last Friday my aunt woke up with blood all over the house from Scout the dog. She saw that Scout's pad was raw and bleeding. She brought her to the vet and the vet immediately thought it was probably cancer. He also thought that there was NO WAY that it had just appeared recently. My aunt knew that it was a recent growth though, because she rubs her paws and also she had just been groomed.
Anyways, he thought he'd have to partially amputate her pad. In the end, he said it was growing right on it, so didn't have to do that. He removed it and sutured (sp?) it up. Sent it in for analysis.
Follow up appt by my aunt today, to re-dress the wound. They opened it up and everyone was absolutely SHOCKED to see that it had grown back and burst right through the sutures. The vet has never seen anything like it. Still pending analysis, but should have that by tomorrow at latest.
It is a growth that seeps blood, it isn't actually bursting. Weird.
Anyone else experience this before?

How horrid.
I'm afraid something growing that fast does sound pretty ominous. Good wishes to your aunt and hopes that it is treatable.

Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
Well, it sounds awful. I've sent the description around to some of my fellow border collie enthusiasts to see if they've ever seen it.
The first thing that came to my mind was a fungal or bacterial infection, maybe even a parasite, but it could be a carcinoma.
Let us know what the histo says.

Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
Taking a stab in the dark but it sounds like the canine version of a cavernous hemangioma, but really aggressive. I don't even know if dogs can get this.
ETA: Had to run to a meeting. Anyway, a cavernous hemangioma can present as a large blood-filled pocket on the hand. That's what made me think of it. Someone I know has this and it's harmless, but his never burst. Again, just a stab in the dark.

Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
My border collie people said that the only thing they've seen like it is Squamous cell carcinoma--but we'll hope that's not what it is as the prognosis is terrible--or was for the three dogs they knew of who had it. They did comment that the location is odd.
Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
My dear cat, Dexter, had Squamous cell carcinoma in the mouth. We thought it was a swelling from an infected tooth so the vet removed the tooth and sent out the gum that he removed for testing. The dire results came in and the growth was back and even larger within 2 weeks. I came home one day to find Dex covered in blood. The growth had broken a blood vessel. I took him into the vet immediately and the vet told me it was only going to get more dangerous and that he would end up bleeding to death. I had to make the decision right then to put him down. It was simply the most heart-rendering thing I've ever had to do and none of us - Chris, myself or Dexter - were anywhere near ready.
Let's hope that that is not what this is. It is an AWFUL form af cancer. Simply awful.

Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
Not liking the sound of this Squamous cell carcinoma. It sounds horrible and does sound like it, especially Dexter's case. I'll keep you guys posted on Scouty. Say a little prayer for her if you don't mind. Thanks for all of the input. And thanks Blanche for checking with your border collie friends.

Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
Jeannette:
I know the three people with Border collies who had it and one person with a rottie--in all of these cases it was in the mouth/jaw so the foot is an odd place for it to be--but who knows.
And I'll be honest with you, the advice from all four folks was that IF it is squamous cell carcinoma, the kindest thing to do is to euthanize the dog. Two fought very short, very grim battles to try and save their dogs and in the end felt that they did great disservice to them by making them go through very invasive procedures that didn't impact on the outcome.

Thanks Blanche. That is good to know. I'm not going to share this with my aunt tonight - it will only make her lose sleep. But if she gets this result from the vet tomorrow, I'll definitely share this information. It breaks my heart. Scout is such a sweet little soul. When Java was alive, she and Scout were best friends.

Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
There is no such thing as a bad dog named Scout. I don't know if you remember my border collie cross named Scout who died in 2007. A good dog in every sense of that word. It was in her memory that I named Jem (Scout and Jem from To Kill a Mockingbird). I miss her every damn day and will not see her like again.Javalita wrote: Scout is such a sweet little soul. You guys are killing me. Scout was a good dog, Blanche. My heart goes out to your Scout, Jeanette.

I thought I had replied yesterday but I can't find my post. Lots of good thoughts for Scout, I hope it's benign.
Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
I sure hope it's nothing serious and can be treated. I'll keep Scout in my thoughts.

Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
Well it is cancer. The vet said it was Spindle round-cell sarcoma. So he referred her to a specialist and she'll be seeing her on Friday. Anyone familiar with this?

I've never even heard of that one. Have you had a chance to research it yet? What does the vet say about treatment/prognosis?Javalita wrote:Well it is cancer. Re: Weird bloody rapid growing growth/tumor?
Ugh. I don't know anything about this type of cancer but I hope it is not aggressive as what Dexter had and is more treatable. The fact that it is on an extremity is probably a good thing.
