Blood work before dental ?
I need to take Rupert in to have his teeth checked, I know he is in need of a dental.
I have the anesthesia guidelines, my ? is when I ask them to do blood work before what are they looking for?

They are looking for any result that might indicate a reason not to put him under anaesthesia or that may indicate a need for extra caution while under.

Bubba had to have a senior panel done last month before his dental today. He was due for his heartworm test, so they did everything at the same time. They said everything looked good.

Thank you. I have been putting this off because I am scared to death of anyting happening to him.
I can't imagine my life without him.

It made me feel better to have the blood work done before ours went into under. At our vet's office it is optional, but highly recommended. We did it :)

Yup, same here! We get the full work up. Like Blanche said, the main thing is if anything odd shows up that could be a reason not to put them under.
Good luck to Rupert, I know exactly how you feel.

What if any are the alternatives to a dental?
Viv had hers done a month ago but oddly I was not worried about her, I just knew she would be fine, Rupert I am very worried, but I did have an awful dream I lost him and it is still haunting me.

Re: Blood work before dental ?
Our vet office requires bloodwork that morning or recent. A big thing they look for is indication of any liver issues.
It's hard to think of a good alternative to a dental since they really do clean well. It will give you a clean palate to work with. Brushing alone just can't get off the tartar and plaque that a dental can. Also, the benefits of a dental are they can examine every tooth and check for any ones that aren't healthy.
If you're really that worried, there are some specialists that only do dentals. Dentals are usually fairly quick procedures. Our office keeps the pets on fluids while they are under, but some don't.
