Any experience with "sleep pooping" ?
Let me say that as soon as I throw on a cap and some street clothes, we're going for a walk to try to get his intestines unloaded. I know older dogs sometimes have incontinence problems, but Wally is only 4, and I have to believe this is related to the stomach bug we're getting him (and his brother) over.
He didn't have a bowel movement yesterday (I assumed the Immodium had kicked in and he'd begin to regulate by today), but this morning, after I let him up into my bed at 6 a.m., Emmet alerted me that Wally had let a few turds out (that's what they are, maybe an inch or so long) in the bed! Argh!
When stripping the bed for laundry, I noticed another in his kennel. Once they'd been outside & eaten, I went to the couch for another hour or two of sleep (if you've been nice enough to read my other threads, I have gotten very little sleep this week, and had my first days of school--not a good combo). Well, dumb me (so tired, I'm not thinking clearly) didn't put a towel or anything under Wally--turd on sofa. ARGH!
Anyway, I'm going to call the vet after our walk, but am wondering if any of you has experienced this. It's like he doesn't know it's happening. Actually, it's probably that he's passing gass and poo is coming out. Help!

No experience with this exactly, but I can say that if Jackson's eaten something that dramatically changes the texture of his poop and increases its volume (say a few paper towels) then he does seem to have a greater urge and less control. While he hasn't pooped while sleeping, he's done things like pooping while peeing. I could perhaps see the Immodium changing the texture.

Unfortunately I'm all too familiar with little brown presents in Big Bed as Gooey has a bad back end. I now make sure he is empty before bedtime. I also make sure he gets lots of calcium in his diet to firm them up so that they are actually easy to clean up and not terribly smelly.

Well, he actually was doing this before I found out about the Immodium (i.e., that you can give it to dogs).
On Friday after school, his back end was inflamed looking at the top (I had had no experience with this either, so it freaked me out!) , and he was dropping turds in the house. Emmet had gotten the bug, too, so I took them up to the vet (I say "up" b/c other problems started a week ago today, so since it was Sunday, we had to go to the extra far away office of our vet b/c it was open, so I just kept going there--Thursday, and Friday too).
Anyway, it was Friday evening that I asked the vet if you could give anything to dogs for the diarrhea (like Immodium) and he told me yes, so I gave Wally just one dose (1/2 a pill for 22 lbs of dog) Friday night when we got home. He hasn't had any since. I gave E a dose Friday night, and then in the middle of the same night when he had more diarrhea. I haven't given him any since, but may today b/c his stool is still quite loose. We'll see.
Our walk was very productive! Wally's are more formed than E's, but E's are at least not all water now. And they both went a LOT, esp. Wally. Perhaps the food the first vet put him on (something for sensitive stomachs) has something to do with it, although his rear was all inflamed again on our walk (it had calmed down before). I'm going to start mixing back in his regular food. The vet on Friday didn't suggest any diet change for Emmet, so I probably could have kept Wally on his regular food.
Wow. This got long, sorry!

I find little nuggest fairly often. Both Salvador and Emi have spinal problems and can't control it. I am just use to it and don't allow either of them under the covers. That was not a pleasant discovery, when you find you've rolled around in it!

That's the thing, Wally doesn't have any spinal issues, he's a young healthy guy. I'm guessing it's what Ginger said--his change in diet (coupled w/ the bacterial infection). Maybe he just hasn't felt the "urge" he usually does. When he was having diarrhea, he was very good about crying in the night and going outside to go, so that's why I'm a bit baffled.

Geez, Lex! I hope your guys feel better, I know how frustrating it is!

Hopefully once the stomach bug has completely passed and his stomach is back to normal, the surprises will stop. As many people, we are also used to the stray turds as Chyna has degenerative disc disease and does not feel the poop until it is actually coming out. It embarrasses her, and she will try to start running away from it. I feel bad for her, but I have been awakened by turds in the bed, on the couch, etc...
