Carina needs your help! HORRIBLE STORY

I just can't get this poor little pug out of my head. How could anyone let her get so bad.

That is so sad. She reminds me of my Hanky, but she is worse. Poor little thing.

OH NO! That poor little thing. She has a HUGE battle on her tiny paws. I'm going to follow her story.

How could this happen? What are people thinking? Thank god she is in rescue. This just breaks my heart. I'm ashamed of humans sometimes.

my heart goes out to her. I hope that she can be helped,saved, and loved. Poor lil girl.

First THANK YOU so much for the donations and support. We so appreciate it. Many of you passed the word around and it has helped a great deal. We are still a long ways from collecting enough money so please continue to help us and make people aware of Carina’s story.



Carina has taken a turn for the worse. On Monday she started with an upper respiratory infection, and we are praying it won’t turn into pneumonia, her immune system is shot and there is no way she would be able to fight it. She is extremely anemic and might need to get a blood transfusion if the levels continue to go down. Again a transfusion is very hard on the system and she might not be able to withstand it. She also has both ear drums ruptured, extremely painful. We are still awaiting final results of the skin culture, but preliminary results show 3 bacteria’s growing one of them being Staph, contagious to other dogs and people and very serious. Today I got the results of her fecal test and she has mange parasites in her intestines as well as Giardia. We did confirm that the left side of her face is paralyzed right now, we don’t know if it is temporary or not, or if it is due to the infection or trauma to the head. So this little girl is not getting a break. As you can see by these pictures that I took last night, her skin is raw and bloodied. It is EXTREMELY hot to the touch. She must be burning up. Yet when I take care of her she wags her tail and tries to kiss me.



I have seen a lot in all the years in rescue, but this one is bad, and it truly breaks your heart seeing the pain she is in. We are keeping on pain meds and a sleuth of other meds around the clock.

Incredibly sad. Saying a special prayer for her now.

These stories break my heart over and over again. So much abuse at the hands of evil people. I am praying for this little girl!

I posted this to my fb profile as I know a lot of you did over the weekend. Long story short, my husband saw Corina's post on my fb page and said that he'd donate his birthday money from my parents to Corina. I thought that was so sweet. We are all praying that she'll make it through all of this.

She is hanging in there. Here;s the update I got today.

Sorry that I haven’t sent an update for a few days. Was handling the preparation for the fair and functioning on 2 hr. sleep a night L



In my opinion Carina is doing better. She had a check up on Friday, and clinically I am told she is about the same. Her skin is about 40% better after the baths and getting the scabs pulled off a little bit at a time. She still has the UPI (upper respiratory infection) but it hasn’t turned into bronchitis or pneumonia, so we are hoping it will hold up. We did discover a hernia on her belly, but that is nothing we will worry about now. Her eye ulcers are improving a lot, and we are pretty sure we won’t have to remove the eye at this point.



I have been cooking her a balance fresh food diet and she is now eating very well 3-4 meals a day. She actually looks forward to it now where before she didn’t look at the dog food that much. I know the cooked food will help her build her immune system faster. It is the same food my own dogs get.

Today after I bathed her, which is the most painful part of this process, she was in her bed and I was getting her e-collar ready (I have to tape gauze all the was around the neck so the plastic doesn’t hurt her sores) I actually saw her trying to pick up the nylabone I had for her. Due to the paralysis on her face it make it difficult for her to pick up things, but I was so encourage that she tried to do that.



I think she is much more alert. I have been weaning her off the pain meds and bought some VERY expensive powder some one told me about that helps heal faster, I started that today, so we will see how that goes.



Since I can’t hold her because she hurts every where and movement makes her skin bleed, I just sit next to her and talk to her. As I always do to my sick babies I sing to them “you are my Sunshine” on Saturday night, I was cleaning her area and started signing it to her, she started wagging her body and wanting to get to me and gave me tons of kisses!!! I cried with joy.



My gut feeling tells me she will make it, though the Drs. told me she is not out of the woods. I rather listen to my gut feelings J

Carina update 3/ 31 They have her sister now too!

Hello every one! We continue to get donations and calls about our beautiful Carina. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Before giving a little bit of info. on Carina, we want to give you some new news. Yesterday we rescued Carina's sister, Carisa (see picture) from another shelter. We were alerted last week of her existence. We have been working very hard to get her out and we did. It appears that the same person dumped them both at different shelters two days a part. It is impossible to know for sure. But the coincidence are too numerous, they look a lot a like, same age, very similar issues, except luckily Carisa is not in critical condition. She just needs a lot of care. Her skin is bad, but not nearly as bad as her sister. Less ticks and fleas. Her eyes are a lot worse and she appears to be almost totally blind, she has SEVERE Pigmentation Karititis on both eyes, even that Vets were shocked as to how bad it was for her age, so most likely poor breeding and genetic, as it is uncommon to have this so bad at such a young age and they both have it. We did take her to the eye specialist to make sure we were not missing anything. That Vet too was very surprised at how bad they are. She will need Cyclosporine for life in both eyes. But due to her condition we can not administer yet, is it prevents healing and now we need to concentrate on her skin and other issues. Luckily we got her in time as to not to get like Carina. Of course this mean double the cost on these babies, so we need your help that much more now! Carisa is a bit on the wild side, not very socialized, tends to be a bit aggressive in a puppy way. She bit my cheek pretty bad yesterday, so lots of work in that dept too. These are not the only dogs in need of care, but some dogs hit people's heart more than others. We have many in-house that have on-going care. One had his second leg surgery yesterday as he came in with a severely broken leg 6 months ago where the bone was deteriorating from being broken for so long. The first surgery didn't take as well, as his bones were so brittle. With good care and good nutrition the bones got strong enough for a second surgery. The second surgery was very successful. Once this heals he will have to have back surgery. Two others had back surgery last month. Each surgery is around $4,000-$6,000. We stop at nothing to get them well, but right now we are $35,000 in debt and that was before Carina and Carisa, so your help is extremely needed.

Now regarding Carina, she is improving daily, more active, eating very well, think the home cooked meal really helped in her on-going recovery. Her skin still looks really bad and it has been over a week. Just raw! The baths are very painful to her but needed. She is truly an ANGEL, so loving so grateful for everything we do. Accepting of everything that is being done to help her. She is going for a battery of test on Friday to access her condition further. I continue to be very optimistic. Even though the Vets are still cautious about her condition, I feel it in my heart that she will make it. It will be a long journey and not an easy one, but we can do it.

Again thank you all very much and as time progresses please continue to support us. After the initial shock of these babies wears off, there is still a long way to go to make them well.

Hi every one and Happy Easter!



Both girls are doing very well. Carisa much better than Carina, as she didn’t have the severe infection nor all the other health issues Carina has. We move Carisa to her foster home with Miki, as she doesn’t need the intensive care Carina does and it is not contagious. Miki is the queen of Mange so she is in good hands.



Carian’s vet check up on Friday went very well, they are extremely pleased with her progress and though she still looks terrible, she is MUCH better. Very alert and responding well. We changed the type of antibiotics we are giving her to see if it helps more. She still has open sores all over her body and many many live mites on her, interesting to see them on the microscope, can’t imagine what they must feel walking all over her, they are microscopic and live under the skin. Her ears are almost healed, maybe one more week of care, but her ear drums are intact now.



It is heartwarming watching her wanting to play with toys. She was afraid of them at first as I don’t think she has ever seen one, but now she brings them to her bed. She has a hard time picking them up due to the paralysis on the left side of her face, but she manages. Every one adores her at the vet and admires her fighting spirit, no one gave her a chance to make it. She is no longer critical, but still very sick, barring any further infections or problems she will make it, she will have a very long journey, but the future is bring for her.



Thanks every one for your prayers. She will be an expensive one, but looking at her sweet face you know we are doing the right thing.

These poor little girls. It is so horrible that someone could let them get into such deplorable conditions. You are doing a wonderful job for Carina, but it's just so maddening that this should have to be done to such a young dog. All I can say is that I hope whoever allowed this to happen to her has to deal with something similar themselves at some point in their life. This was more than neglect, it's neglect bordering on abuse.

This story breaks my heart - truly Angels are watching out for Carina and Carisa now. I hope those people that let her come to this condition get a taste of thier own medicine.

Hey Lisa, any news on how Carina & Carisa are doing now? I checked the blog & the Pug N Pals website but I don't see anything new since April.

I think no news is good news. I'll find out tho'. I looked & was wondering the same thing.
