Our local Humane Society
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/killing-them-with-kindness/article1160810/
Sadly, this is our local humane society. We've been struggling with them for years. With luck and some community outrage, maybe this series of articles will change things. They will never surrender to rescue. Tim would rather let animals die in their cages than give an animal to rescue.
This is a classic example of letting Ideology get in the way of good animal care. Tim would rather have low euthanasia rates than good care. And he's a major control freak.

Heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking. For everyone involved.
How wrong it can all go.

Sadly, Tim Trow has been a major issue for years and years. There is simply no working with him. He refuses to deal with rescues as he sees the THS as providing the same service that rescues do.
THS has had great staff for years, but have lost many of them due to Tim. It's an unworkable environment.

Oh Blanche, I couldn't even get the entire way through the article. This is just heartbreaking. That man is completely heartless.

I am not going to read it because I can only imagine. Blanche, hopefully this gets tons of attention and people do get outraged!! Sometimes, organizations are okay with what is going on until the public gets wind of it! This might be the catalyst to get some change in there.
Probably only about 5-6 years ago, the Chattanooga Humane Education society got some horrible press, maybe all the way up to CNN, about a pug that had been found on their premises. It was before my time, but I heard the stories. They had the highest euthanasia rate in the country-that might be an exaggeration. Since then, the board brought in a new shelter manager and they have turned the place around about 180 degrees. It is not perfect, but they are very rescue friendly, have gone cageless, have a goal of being a NO-KILL Shelter! They are still working towards their goal, but at least it is a goal.

Ugh. This reminded me so much of our shelter, Lied. For years they wouldn't work with rescue, would rather let them die. Then a couple of years ago, they had a huge outbreak of parvo because of the gross conditions. The outcry was huge, and it made SOME difference-not as much as I would like but I guess baby steps are better than none. This is good and bad news. Good because the conditions are marginally better, bad because the animals time to get adopted is even shorter. But at least now they will call us before they euthanize a pug (not for the healthy ones though).
One day, maybe they will all be like Best Friends. Speaking of which, Best Friends even offered to come and help the shelter and help reorganize and they turned them down. Like I said, not much better but at least they have called us about some pugs.
Re: Our local Humane Society
Part of the problem with THS is that Tim Trow WANTS to be no kill and so rather than euthanize, he lets animals die in their crates so he has better euthanasia stats to present to the board. In some of the last years the number of animals that have died in their crates has been DOUBLE the number of animals euthanized. Sorry, but that isn't humane.
He adopted pit bulls with SERIOUS bite records out (he did this out of province since they are banned here) rather than euthanize. I'm all for opposing banning based on breed, but he doesn't help the case when he refuses to euthanize dogs that have a public record of maulings.

That was part of the problem here too-they kept overcrowding because they didn't their kill numbers to go up. It seemed obvious that the better solution was to get other rescues involved, but guess that wasn't on their solution list, not until after the outbreak.
Re: Our local Humane Society
This Tim Trow seems to run it like his own personal kingdom. It's like he OWNS the place! Very, VERY sad.
