Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
I wasn't sure if this should be in the nutrition section or medical section.
I've been up since 3:30 with Tilly. She has been vomiting most of the time and shivering. She is starting to settle down now after 5 hours of that. I believe Canidae brought it on. I had to switch dogfood a couple weeks ago on the spur of the moment. I didn't know which brand to pick, so I saw Canidae and took it. The transition was NOT a problem. For the first two weeks, she was doing fine except for loose yellow stools. After last night, I did some research on the internet and found that Canidae has changed it's formula and lots and lots of dogs have gotten sick from it. Have any of you experienced this or feed Canidae?

That sounds just awful!! No experience here, but I hope Tilley feels better soon!
Re: Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
Poor Tilly. I used to feed Canidae and would have gladly paid $100 a bag for them NOT to have changed the formulas! It was the first time in years that all of mine were eating the same food. I didn't know they changed anything and Teddy, who was the oldest, got sick with diarrhea-no vomiting though. The others didn't get sick, but they were younger. I thew mine away, but if I were you, I'd take it back where you got it and exchange it. My pet store does that for me if I get something the pugs don't like. I have been on California Natural for over a year and have been very happy with it. We are on the Chicken b/c of Baby Girl's UTIs.

I don't use it, but I am sending hugs out to my sweet Sally girl. I hope she feels better soon. Did you take her to the dogtor?
Re: Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
I found a ton of stuff on the Web. A lot of dogs are having problems with it.

I am so sorry she is going thorough that. we tried Canidae about year ago, and it didn't make CP that sick, but it did NOT agree with her. I threw out the bag.

I haven't used Canidae in years because there have been pretty consistent issues with it. I'm really sorry that Tilly has been so sick. Lots of hugs for her and for you as I'm sure you're worried.

I tried Canidae years ago and it just didn't agree with mine so I stopped feeding it and didn't ever try it again.

Good grief! How are people supposed to know this stuff. So many dogs have gotten sick with the same symptoms as Tilly's and some have even died. Thanks for the links, MJ.

Poor little punkin! Scraps, Penny's favorite store, sells a bunch of Canidae. I'll ask tomorrow what they have heard. Give Miss Tilly a gentle hug from me and Penny.

That is horrible about the reports MJ found, I am so sorry, I would have never guessed that about Canidae I have always heard good things about it, lots of show breeders I have met said they feed it.
Please let us know how Tilly is doing, poor thing.

Poor Tilly, I hope she feels better soon.
I really wish these stupid companies would be more clear when they change formulas-it would save people a lot of grief!!

Re: Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
My mom recently switched Manny over to Canidae on the vet at Tuft's recommendation because it was a lower-protein food. Their link says the new formula has increased the protein levels. I wonder if they really did sent this out to vets?
Manny has been ok, but I did give my mom a head's up just in case.
Can anyone recommend a lower-protein food alternative?

I googled low protein dog food, and other than prescription foods, the other thing that came up was Flint River Ranch: http://www.healthyfoodforpets.com/dog-adult.html

I believe senior dog food has lower protein levels. I've fed Innova senior before and I think it was @ 18%.

Re: Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
Oh wow. We feed ours Canidae and they do very well on it. I had no idea they changed it. My fosters have all done well on it too.
I wonder if they changed the Senior low fat one. I haven't looked at MJ's findings yet but I am really interested to read about this.
I hope Tilly is doing better. Poor little baby. Give her a hug for me.

Re: Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
Tilly is still sick, but hasn't thrown up since yesterday afternoon. The vet said she has to go 24 hours without throwing up before we can try to feed her a tablespoon of rice with chicken broth. I feel so bad for her and can tell she feels crappy. She doesn't even have any interest in food right now. She is drinking water and peeing so that is a plus.

Re: Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
Poor Tilly. If she isn't even interested in food then it's best to keep her off it. I'm glad that the water is staying down - that's good.
Hope she's better soon.

Re: Dogfood Made Tilly really sick
I'm so glad that she's not throwing up any more. This is just awful, and I'm really disgusted with the manufacturers. What do they think, we just blindly feed our furkids without knowing anything about the food? I hate to say it, but I'm starting to wonder if there shouldn't be some sort of overseeing of food for our pets. Anyway, enough rant. Give Miss Tilly a big gentle hug from me and Penny, and we'll continue our positive thoughts for her.
