Tramadol question

Hi all,

I have a question for any of you. My rescue pug had to have twelve teeth pulled today. He is doing okay but I think he is feeling discomfort. The hospital gave us Tramadol to give to him. He is smart though and can smell or taste it no matter what I put it in. Help! I don't want to force it in him but I don't want him uncomfortable either. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Kristen, what have you tried to hide the pill in? All pills in our house are given in cream cheese. I've also given pills in peanut butter or liverwurst and not had problems.

Peanut butter has always worked for us. Or, chicken stage 1 baby food.

I tried the peanut butter but not the cream cheese. I will give that a try. Thanks ladies.

Tramadol has a strong and bitter taste so don't be surprised if you have to be sneaky about getting it in and don't be horrified if his mouth starts to foam and drool if he does bite into it.

I have used cream cheese and peanut butter with success. For the really finicky, "I can find a pill anywhere" dogs, I smear liverwurst on a small piece of luncheon meat, put the pill in the liverwurst and then roll the whole thing up. BUT first I give a couple of pieces of the luncheon meat and liverwurst without the pill to get them out of the suspicious "I know you're trying to poison me" head space. Then I give the pill piece and immediately follow it with a couple more non pill pieces. I've used roast beef or ham with the best success in this.

Voilet had had a dental last week where they removed the rest of her teeth. Yes, if you can get a tramadol down, then do. She was able to eat the first night, but each dog will react to the anestethia (sp?) differently though.

Yeah success! The cream cheese worked but I will keep the other ideas in mind when it comes to giving it tomorrow. Thank you again for such quick response. He seems a bit more at ease and the longer it is in him the more comfortable he will be. :)
