Lola Update
It looks like Miss Lola may have a disc issue. For now, she's on tramadol for pain and is on 4 weeks of crate rest. We will reassess after two weeks and if there's no improvement or worsening then we'll get a referral to a neurologist and see where we go from there.
She was reactive as my vet was feeling down her spine at the mid way point--closer to the shoulder than the tail, but clearly wasn't liking it. Her reflexes on the back legs are slower than they should be (you know when they turn the paw under and check how quickly the dog corrects).
My vet feels that the loss of sight and hearing may have been more psychological than physical as she is clearly back to normal with both. She thinks that she has been in pain and likely did whatever to her back on Friday and so was focussed on her pain and not on me.

Re: Lola Update
Well, she won't be crated as she's pretty sedentary in the house. But she'll get carried up and down all stairs and won't be allowed to pursue squirrels outside. She's pretty easy to manage in the energy department in the house. It's outside where it's a tougher gig so she'll be on leash.TxAllieGrl wrote:poor girl. how will she handle the crate rest Blanche? extended vacation in a private villa, or as exile?
She'll be thrilled to be carried, but will be pissed about the lack of squirrel chasing.
Re: Lola Update
I hope the meds help her feel more like her ole self!

Re: Lola Update
we will keep you and lola in our thoughts... I hardly need to say it... but lift carefully... a dog in pain - even one who has chosen you as L has, can snap first and think later.. eh?

Re: Lola Update
Lola and I have a carrying routine down pat. She has always been carried from time to time as she has, over the years, periodically decided that her walk is being ruined by the exercise. I appreciate the head's up, but if there's one dog I'm VERY careful with--it's Lola.......ayleash wrote:we will keep you and lola in our thoughts... Re: Lola Update
Here's hoping the meds and the carrying with no squirrel chasing will do the trick.

Can she have squirrel stuffy to dismantle during convalescence? Good to hear the DeathPom's vet has a treatment plan.
Lola does not demand a wagon or silken pillow as a conveyance?
Re: Lola Update
Blanche, I do hope the rest and pain meds help Lola find relief and she's back to chasing squirrels in no time.
Re: Lola Update
Interestingly, she's never been a toy kind of dog. I guess she figures why dismantle the toy when the real thing is in the yard. And I have a sling that I've used over the years to carry her. She scorned the wagon that Bob used to ride in by peeing in it (too many pug cooties) and I'd be afraid she might make a death defying leap off of a pillow.DappleDoxieStaff wrote:northernwitch wrote:She'll be thrilled to be carried, but will be pissed about the lack of squirrel chasing.

So for now, it will just be my arms--no need of the sling for the limited outside time she'll get.

I sure hope that this will be the answer you need!

Re: Lola Update
Poor Lola! I hope it ends up being something she can heal from - and quickly, too. Meanwhile, call the sherpas back from Everest so she can have some proper assistance with everything. Maybe they'll even catch squirrels for her too.

Fingers crossed that some time and rest and pain meds will help do the trick. Good luck keeping her from chasing squirrels.

Re: Lola Update
Sending positive thoughts that rest and pain meds will get our Death Pom back in full fighting (and squirrel chasing) form. I would ask you to give her a hug from me, but, well, it is Lola.

I hope Ms. Lola is feeling better soon and that the meds take care of her issues (or at least the medical ones).

Re: Lola Update
You'll have to put blinders on her to keep her from going after the squirrels. I hope the meds do their job quickly and that Lola is back to her old scary self very soon.

Re: Lola Update
This sounds very much like Baby Girl. She was fine one day and the next day she could barely walk. From BG's x-rays, she has compressed disks, not necessarily bulging. We did the same thing of putting her on Tramadol and rest. She is not able to climb our 5 stairs so that is not a problem with her trying, so we just carry her. In the beginning, we thought that she was going to need a cart, but she has gotten better over time. Not back to 100%, but she can get around. Once she gets to a plateau, you might want to look into acupuncture. Good luck with keeping her calm for the next couple of weeks!
