Ugh - euthanized dogs & cats in rendered meat??
http://www.truthaboutpetfood.com/articles/epa-document-proves-euthanized-dogs-and-cats-are-rendered.html
Check out this article. It talks about how euthanized dogs and cats are being used in rendered meat for dog foods!!
Yikes this is scary, and disgusting.
I feed my dogs a raw diet, so I know it does not contain rendered meats, but I have been using Wellness kibble as a supplement (because Ichiro lost too much weight)....I hope to heck that Wellness does not use rendered meat!
These compaies should be shut down!

Yup...sick isn't it? Thats just one of the reasons that feeding a QUALITY dog food is so very important. I remember a few years back that they were testing dogs who ate a dog food that was made for a certain retailer and the dogs all came back with high phenobarbitol values when they were not taking any drugs. Turns out a lot of dogs and cats are euthanized using high doses of phenobarbitol.
The Whole Dog Journal will now only give acceptable ratings to dog food companies who actually allow them to visit and inspect the facilities.

yes it's disgusting, and nothing new!
the 3 D's get thrown into the rendering pot....picture a big soup pot where they throw, dead, diseased, and downed animals......
whatever disease they have gets mixed right in with the pet food....
the chemicals in their body from the euthanasia, or other medicine gets thrown right into the pot.....
I read a book called The nature of animal healing, the path to your pets health happiness and longevity by martin goldstein DVM
I urge everyone to read this wonderful book.
I believe it was the first chapter that talked about the rendering plant/pot, and one thing mentioned never left my mind. The author mentioned seeing a little red leather collar in the pot.....which was thrown in with a beloved pet.....they don't care, they throw it all in.

Yikes. If you can't go with a raw diet, which brands of food do you recommend?

This is what I was thinking too! It is scary as heck to not know if the food you are choosing may contain rendered meat and euthanized animals!
The article says that producers of dog food do not specify if their food comes from rendered meat or not, and they are not required to specify it.
I feed a raw diet (and thankful every day that I do!), but, I often use kibble for fosters, and as a supplement for my pug Ichiro, because he has lost weight on a straight raw diet.
The raw diet I use is The Honest Kitchen. It is 100% human grade!
The kibble I use is Wellness. I have heard nothing but good things about them. I only use the fish formula. I also had a foster recently with a lot of allergies. I had her on Natural Balance LID Fish Formula. It worked very well for her.

Yup. It's pretty darned gross. I'm all for recycling and re-use, but this is NOT what I would consider green (now, the color of my face whenever I read about this...THAT is green).

It's a common thing, farmers render down dead pigs for pig feed, and chickens for chicken feed, then we eat that meat. Now usually this is for low grade meat that usually is only used for processed food but you never know.
